Sales Tax Repeal Update: Special Meeting
|
The Board of Commissioners has called a Special Meeting over the objection of President Stroger to consider repealing the sales tax increase. The Special Meeting of the Board of Commissioners will be held this Monday, November 16th at 10am.
I have sponsored an amendment to repeal the entire 1% sales tax increase, this proposed amendment will be discussed at Monday's meeting. The rollback of the County sales tax would take effect July 1, 2010.
As a result of a recent bill passed by the State Legislature and signed yesterday by Governor Quinn, the number of Cook County Commissioners needed to override a veto has changed from 14 to
11. This change in the veto override requirement will help ensure that any repeal passed by the County Board will be permanent.
Although the sales tax will not be reduced until July of next year, the swift passage of this amendment will ensure that the County's FY2010 budget be balanced with the lower revenue estimates resulting from reduced tax receipts after the rollback takes effect.
