Bicycle Trail Spur in Deer Grove
|
Today the Cook County Forest Preserve District Board approved an
Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between the Village of Palatine to construct a bicycle trail
spur in the Deer Grove Forest Preserve.
The Forest Preserve
District maintains 3.8 miles of paved bicycle trails within the Deer
Grove Preserve in Northwest
Cook County.
Per the IGA, the Village of Palatine
will construct a bicycle trail spur approximately 250' long on District
property to connect the existing trail to the public right of way at the northwest corner of Dundee Road and Hicks Road in Palatine.
There will be no cost to the District, as the Village of Palatine will assume the costs of design and
construction.

National Public Lands Day
|
The Forest Preserve District of Cook County has acquired and preserved
over 67,000 acres of open land, a valuable component of
America's system of public lands and an important natural and cultural
resource for environmental
learning, appreciation and recreation. In recognition of this, I have joined my
fellow Forest Preserve District Commissioners in sponsoring a resolution Proclaiming September 26, 2009 National
Public Lands Day in Cook County.
National Public Lands Day has become
an annual event that encourages local participation on
public lands as well as promotes stewardship and awareness
among private citizens. The 2009 National Public Lands Day
will include some 80,000 volunteers at more than 600 sites across the country
and with over 20 work sites scheduled in Illinois.
Along with Commissioner Suffredin, I am sponsoring a work day at Harms Flatwoods from 9am to 3pm on September 26th in recognition of National Public Lands Day. I encourage you to join my staff in volunteering at Harms Flatwoods and participate in the shared stewardship of this precious public resource.

Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps
|
The Friends of the Forest Preserves gave a presentation at today's Board Meeting about their
Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps, a paid summer internship program for high school students benefiting the open spaces
of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
The 56 participants were selected from 600 applicants and led by 11 college age and adult volunteer leaders--their collective service in the District this summer totaled 10,000 hours. Participants worked at various sitesthroughout the Cook County Forest Preserves
(including River Trail Nature Center in the 14th District) for six weeks, with one additional week of training. The program
included work at five sites and involved invasive species removal, land
management and assisting with erosion control measures among other
duties. About half of these participants are expected to come back and
volunteer in the forest preserves over the winter months.
We are proud to have four high school students from the 14th District selected for the program this past summer: Amie
Connor, Melanie Bachhuber, Young-Eun Kim and Samatha Bulmash. These students did excellent work and we look forward to seeing more participants from our district in summers to come!
For more information on this summer internship program, please contact Benjamin Cox at benjamin@fotfp.org.
