White House Health Plan Session
Over the past two years, I have chaired the National Association of Counties' Hospital Task Force, studying the challenges affecting the delivery of quality health services for public hospitals. After my recent presentation of  our findings to the Healthcare Reform Group developing policy recommendations, I was asked to attend a meeting at the White House to participate further in the discussion.

I flew out to Washington, DC on Monday to meet with White House administrators and represent the County perspective as White House staff began drafting the President's healthcare reform policy.  It is critical that the suburban voice be heard as the changes that are being considered will impact our communities.

County governments operate the safety net hospitals. Without these programs, existing resources would be stressed, increasing wait times and decreasing services. The bottom line is, if the county safety net infrastructure is compromised the impact on the private hospitals and our local communities would be devastating.
Proposed Precinct Changes
At today's board meeting, the County Clerk proposed the elimination of 350 voting precincts under the jurisdiction of the Cook County Election Department, changing the total number from 2,290 to 1,940.  More than half of these precincts share a polling place with other precincts.

This proposal is intended to reduce costs associated with the Judges of Elections, equipment programming, equipment delivery and polling place rental fees. A public hearing on the proposed changes will be held prior to July 21st.  We will update you when the date for the public hearing is set so you have the opportunity to voice your opinion..
