Sales Tax Repeal Update

At this morning's County Board Meeting, I once again sponsored a motion to override President Stroger's veto of the sales tax repeal.  A successful override required 14 votes, and we came up short again today with only 9 Yeas.

All new ordinance proposals to repeal the sales tax have been sent to the Finance Committee, which will meet next week for consideration.  In the interim, I will continue working for a compromise that will allow the tax repeal to be passed at the next County Board Meeting on June 16th.

Transparency in Government
Today I signed the Transparency in Government Pledge offered by the Illinois Policy Institute, pledging my belief that "citizens deserve a more transparent and accountable government, with easy access to information about how the government spends taxpayer dollars."

This pledge reaffirms my support for efforts to implement greater transparency in Cook County.  It is in this vein that I am sponsoring a resolution "To Create an Online Monthly Check Register" at tomorrow's Forest Preserve District Board Meeting.  This resolution will bring the Forest Preserve up to speed with the legislation creating an online monthly check for Cook County, which I co-sponsored this winter.
Clean Indoor Air Ordinance
The Clean Indoor Air Ordinance prohibits smoking within a certain distance from any entrance, exit or windows that open.  At today's Board Meeting, I sponsored an amendment doubling the prohibited space to 30 feet to ensure that citizens, especially those suffering from asthma or other respiratory conditions, are not unduly exposed to secondhand smoke as they go about their daily lives.
