Greetings from the CEO,

On Thursday, March 29th, I was honored to accept an award from The National Association of Social Workers, Massachusetts Chapter, as its 2012 "Employer of the Year." I may have received it, but I certainly didn't earn it alone. There are the jobs we're paid to do...our program and clinical duties, and there are the other things that people do to make their workplace a better place for others.

Family Continuity is fortunate to have staff and Board members who go out of their way every day, not only to make life better for the individuals and families we serve, but also for their co-workers. They do this through sitting on important committees addressing issues like workplace safety, staff morale and retention, and quality improvement, by sharing their skills through in-service training and supervising volunteers and interns, through participating in satisfaction and benefits surveys and, sharing their ideas on how to improve the organization. Virtually every positive change at this agency bears the handprint of staff who help make this a better place to work.

We know that Family Continuity is far from perfect, but with the continued efforts of a dedicated and talented staff, you can never tell just how good we can get.

Excellence
Family Continuity
Employer of the Year
Skip Stuck, CEO

Sincerely,

Stressed Out Today?

Stress-Stop

Most of us have felt "stressed out" at one time or another. When this feeling persists day after day, stress becomes chronic. Chronic stress can take a toll on our careers, on our families, our quality of life, and on our bodies, making us susceptible to a host of illnesses. When we can't control our stress and reactions to it, it multiplies, stressing out loved ones and co-workers alike. What many of us don't realize-and what medical researchers are confirming in study after study-is that our stress levels are directly linked to our physical well-being. Seventy-five percent of our visits to the doctor's office concern stress-related ailments. Almost half of us suffer physically due to stress. Chronic stress can affect the body in a number of ways: It weakens the immune system, which can cause fatigue and make us more susceptible to colds and the flu. It can also trigger a variety of ailments from gum disease to osteoporosis; cause premature aging; and lead to life-threatening illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Continue here to continue reading about common sources of stress, how it affects us and most importantly some great strategies for managing stress.

Bobby's Story

This month, we've talked about our staff's "extra effort" in many areas.  Real Stories aren't just about how Family Continuity changes the lives of its families...our work almost always changes us as well, as you will see in this letter from one of our staff...

I have had the pleasure of providing In-Home therapy to Bobby J. and his family for the past year. Bobby lives at home with his mother, Janet, who is a single parent. In addition to caring for Bobby, Janet is challenged with her own serious medical problems. This has never stopped her from being a steadfast, tireless advocate for her son since his birth. From birth, Bobby has had a very difficult life. Continue reading Bobby's story here...

StaffNews Take An Evening To Enjoy The Best Of Our Youth Today!

Family Continuity is fortunate to have some great partners, and comExpress Yourselfmunity resources which enrich the lives of its clients around the state. One of the best is "Express Yourself."

Express Yourself celebrates the power of creative arts and changes the lives of underserved youth in the community and in residential treatment facilities. Great performances explode many myths about young people with mental illness and allow them to explore art as a path towards a healthy sense of self identity, belonging, and feeling valued for their artistic contributions.  Since 1989, over 2,200 kids in newly created communities have worked collaboratively with artists and celebrities. Youth and artists become inspired during a full-year program creating set designs, visual art, and performance pieces for their grand celebration at the Citi Performing Arts Center's Wang Theatre on May 17, 2012 at 7pm.  The grand performance is free and is absolutely not to be missed!

Family Continuity's Mission Statement:
Supporting family success in every community by empowering people, enhancing their strengths, and creating solutions through partnerships to achieve hope, positive change and meaningful lives.

Agency Values: Family, Community, Advocacy, Leadership, and Change

Treatment Philosophy, founded on the belief that positive change is always possible:

*  The most effective treatment provides a continuity of care, acknowledging that connected, relevant supportive services to clients/client families promote recovery, stability, self advocacy and permanency in the midst of changing needs.

*  Therapeutic change occurs in the context of a dynamic treatment partnership between clients and helpers that is founded on choice, respect, honesty, and a shared responsibility for and participation in the development of solutions.

*  Effective treatment is empowering and strength-based, recognizing that all clients possess resources for change and that change is possible when these resources are utilized.

*  Creating meaningful lives starts with identifying goals and connecting that to individualized, flexible and creative treatment planning that incorporates a client's family/community relationships, culture, and context.
