Greetings from the CEO,
We've all heard the expression, "You don't know what you don't know." For me this is an especially helpful reminder. At Family Continuity, we have tremendous experience in many areas, skilled staff, and proven models that drive our services. But it turns out that "what we know" is not enough. This thinking is a trap that can make us complacent, not searching out new opinions and feedback that will help us improve as an agency.
We are in the midst of our strategic planning, and an important part of this process is reaching out, beyond our staff and Board, to clients and other community stakeholders, to help us learn "...what we don't know." Finding out what we don't know is important to us, and the only way to do it is to ask. This month's Program Highlight is a brief, confidential survey, designed to provide people with an opportunity to give us the feedback we need to become better. We hope you will take a few minutes and help us plan for how we can better meet our mission in the coming years.

Who is a Family Continuity "stakeholder"? It is anyone who has a stake in the agency;
- an individual or family member who receives services,
- a neighbor, or community member,
- another organization or school that comes in contact with the agency in a professional capacity,
- a donor or funding agency that pays for our services, or
- basically, anyone who knows about the agency and has something to offer in terms of its services or the needs of their community.

Children's Services From The Family Perspective
Last month, we featured feedback from families who are involved in the mental health system, striving to find services that will help their children thrive. With the help of Mary Lambert, PPAL Senior Family Support Specialist and Family Continuity Board member, our September Newsletter covered some of the questions that parents have related to the education system. In this month's newsletter, we want to cover Part 2 of Mary's feedback on "Children's Services from the Family Perspective", where she shares the views of families and the difficulties they encounter understanding the "system" and accessing support for their children.

Real Stories
The decision to change is a critical one... it is lonely, nobody can do it for you. But actually making the changes necessary to lead a productive and happy life is usually where friends, partners, and relationships come in. Rebecca's story illustrates this point...
Rebecca's Story
Before coming to Family Continuity, I was going through quite a few hardships in my life. I was struggling with depression, also I had a lot of anxiety about going out to public places, like stores and restaurants. It caused me to make really poor choices for myself. I started using drugs to escape the sadness I was feeling. I felt like I was stuck in a tunnel trying to reach the light at the end. The more depressed I got, the further away from the light I got.
Eventually, I turned to "cutting", hurting myself, to cope with my problems. At the time, I hadn't even heard that other people did that. I thought I was the only one. It was a very lonely time.
