Canine Influenza
Our priority is to keep all our dogs safe and keep owners educated and updated on any news we hear concerning your dogs health. Due to the rising concern about H3N8 Canine Influenza, we have been in contact with different veterinarians in the area to get their opinions on wether or not vaccinating is necessary at this time.
Should your dog get the CANINE INFLUENZA VACCINE
Because this will be a rising concern for all dog owners, as well as dog facilities we highly recommend everyone consider getting your dog the vaccine as soon as possible. We here at Classie Canines have looked into all the different opinions about this vaccine and the concern of the virus in this area and feel at some point it WILL make its way to us. People are buying and adopting dogs from all across the country. Somewhere a dog or puppy will come in contact with this virus and it will end up in Massachusetts. If we get as many dogs as possible vaccinated now, by the time it comes it hopefully will have very little effect on our dogs. Our vet has agreed to give the vaccine as low cost as possible to all Classie Canines clients so we can protect as many dogs as possible. The shots are a series of 2 and MUST be given within 3 weeks of each other or the vaccine is NOT EFFECTIVE.
Lloyd Animal Medical Center - 1995 Washington Street - Stoughton, MA 02072 - 781-344-2500 Will give the vaccine at the hospital during regular business hours. To avoid long waiting time call ahead so they can be ready for you.
COST Lloyds clients - $16 for each vaccine ($32. Total)
NO OFFICE VISIT NON Clients - But a client at Classie Canines $35 for the first Vaccine and $20 for the second
($55. total) NO OFFICE VISIT

EGG-CELLENT EASTER SAFETY TIPS
KEEP ALL CHOCOLATE OUT OF REACH OF YOUR DOGS!!!
Chocolate can be very toxic and is dangerous for your dog.
Plastic Easter grass cannot be digested and it can cause intestinal damage. This is a big attraction with cats, but it can cause major problems for playful dogs too. Keep baskets with Easter grass out of reach from all your precious pets.
If you´re having a backyard Easter Egg hunt, use plastic eggs instead of hard boiled eggs to prevent another potential illness. Unfound hard-boiled eggs will spoil when left lying in the grass. Your dog will find them later! For just a small amount more than real eggs, plastic eggs can prevent a trip to the vet with a dog in distress.
Your dog probably won´t pay much attention to new Easter plants especially while you´re there. If your dog has separation anxiety, however, and you haven´t made the wise decision to buy a crate, keep Easter plants outside or way out of reach when you're not home. Tearing house plants apart is a common activity for nervous, lonely, uncrated dogs. Daffodil, Hyacinth and tulip bulbs are toxic, as well as Easter Lillies and Hydrangea plants.

DOGGIE DIGEST..HIDE THOSE EASTER BASKETS
Like most pet owners, you probably know by now that chocolate is toxic to dogs. You would never share chocolate bunnies with your dog. Since Easter is this month, be sure to remind everyone in your family of the danger and ask them to take extra precautions to keep Easter candy out of your dog´s reach. Don´t allow small children to have chocolate candy when the dog is nearby. Remind guests not to share Easter goodies with your friendly little pup, no matter how cute she looks when she begs. If your dog has the house to himself when you´re away, make sure everyone´s Easter baskets are up high or in a room behind closed doors, where your dog could not possibly reach them. Big dogs might not be able to resist the temptation of a counter full of chocolate candy. Small dogs, who are at highest risk, can climb on a chair to reach a table full of candy or pull on a tablecloth to bring the candy to the floor. Chocolate toxicity is among the 20 most common poisonings reported by the National Animal Poison Control Center. It´s more common at Easter, Halloween and Christmas when chocolates and candies are sometimes all around the house in open candy dishes, treat bags, baskets, gift bags and shopping bags. Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant related to caffeine, that´s harmless to us but toxic to dogs. It can cause vomiting and diarrhea, restlessness and hyperactivity, excessive thirst and increased urination, a rapid heart rate and excessive panting. Larger amounts can be fatal. Small dogs have a much higher mortality risk after consuming chocolate than large dogs. One small chocolate rabbit might have little or no affect on a German Shepherd, but the same amount of chocolate could kill a Chihuahua. The severity depends on the dogs's weight, the type of chocolate and the amount of chocolate consumed.

SPRING NEWS
Everyone loves lush green lawns and Spring is the right time to apply lawn treatments .... fertilizers for healthy lawns and products to kill weeds and control crab grass. Unfortunately, the same products that produce healthy lawns can sometimes cause health problems for pets. By taking a few precautions, we can protect our pets and still have lush green lawns. Before applying lawn treatments or before treatment by a professional lawn service, remove any pet water and food dishes from the yard. Always keep your pets inside while chemicals are being applied and keep them off the treated grass for at least 24 hours after an application. If your dog manages to come in contact with a freshly treated lawn in spite of your best efforts, wash it's paws with soap and water immediately. If you live in a neighborhood with adjoining yards, make sure your dog doesn't wander onto a neighbor´s newly treated lawn.
There are other Springtime dangers.....
Tree Sprays, Garden Dusts, and Foggers Spring is also the time to apply pesticides to gardens and trees. Chemical pesticides are applied as tree sprays, garden dusts, foggers, and in a variety of fruit and vegetable sprays. Keep pets away from the area under and around freshly sprayed trees for at least 24 hours. Keep them out of gardens and flower beds after applying pesticide sprays or dusts.
Slug and Snail Killing Pellets Never scatter slug and snail killer pellets in gardens or flower beds if you have pets of if neighborhood pets have access to your yard. Dogs find the small blue poisonous slug pellets tasty. Use a commercial bait trap or pellet holder that´s out of reach to pets instead.
Rodenticides Ingestion of mouse and rat poison is another danger. These poisons come in cardboard containers filled with poisonous pellets. Since dogs can obviously chew through the cardboard to get the tempting bait, their owners carefully place them in spots their dogs can't reach. When rodents invade their homes to stay warm in fall, people put the little boxes underneath kitchen drawers and behind shelves in garages and sheds. When things are moved for Spring clean-up, the dog is right there to grab the forgotten poisonous traps. Most people realize how dangerous pest control poisons are to pets, but there may be things they DON´T know that could save their dogs' lives. Rodent poisons may not cause vomiting or other typical symptoms of poisoning. They contain a compound that causes a life-threatening bleeding disorder.
Cocoa Mulch The danger of poisoning from Theobromine, the ingredient in chocolate that is toxic to dogs, does not end with the chocolate candy or the baking chocolate inside your home. Pet owners should never use cocoa bean mulch in their flower beds or as garden fertilizer. "Cocoa Mulch", made from cocoa bean shells, contains potentially toxic quantities of Theobromine. Even if your dog has absolutely no interest in other types of garden mulch, cocoa mulch smells like chocolate and that smell attracts dogs. Dogs have died from eating cocoa mulch! For your convenience we can apply Advantix or Frontline plus to your dog for a $15.00 charge
As April brings us the bright warm sun those little creatures that we all despise will start to appear. Spring is the height of tick season so make sure to check your dogs thoroughly after those long walks and hikes in the woods. Ticks can also be in your own back yard so check your dog regularly. Summer will bring the fleas!!
Facts About Ticks Appearance Small (1/8 - 1/2" long) dark brown, round, blood-sucking parasite. Adult ticks have eight legs, larvae or seed ticks have six. Life Cycle 4 stages: egg - larva - nymph - adult
Warning Signs Ticks may appear as a small dark speck on your pet's fur, or may appear as small growths when engorged. Examine your pet's skin regularly, checking for the presence of ticks. Infestations are more common in dogs than cats. Tick-Related Problems
Although not all ticks carry disease, it is important to note that certain ones can transmit various diseases. The brown dog tick and the American dog tick are the most common carriers of disease among dogs. This includes Ehrlichia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lymes disease and tick paralysis. All these diseases can be life threatening, so seek veterinary care immediately if you pet contracts any of them.
Lymes disease - serious disease usually transmitted by deer ticks to humans and animals. Signs include lameness, fever, weight loss, lethargy and fever. Condition may become chronic.
Treatment To effectively eliminate Ticks and prevent re-infestation, you must break the Tick life cycle. Spot topical treatments like Advantix for dogs and revolution or Frontline for cats. They will also kill and repel adult Ticks.
Facts About Fleas Appearance Small (1/12 - 1/16" long) dark, reddish-brown, wingless, blood-sucking insects. Hard, flattened bodies covered with short spines and long legs adapted for jumping. Life Cycle 4 stages: - egg - larva - pupa - biting adult
Warning Signs Pets infested with fleas will bite and scratch themselves constantly. Their coats become roughened and the skin can become infected. Watch for excessive scratching and use a flea comb on your pet regularly, checking for black specks or "flea dirt." The usual flea bite has a small red spot where the flea has bitten. Flea-Related Problems Besides the discomfort even one flea bite can cause people and pets, there are more serious medical concerns that may result from fleas. Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) - Some pets or people may develop an allergy to flea saliva. Even one flea bite can result in significant irritation, itchiness and aggravation that lasts up to 5 days. It is characterized by small scabs and redness at the bite site, hair loss and secondary infection. The primary treatment is to remove the existing fleas and prevent future flea bites. Tape Worms - this intestinal parasite is a common ailment associated with fleas. Though not transmitted by bites, fleas cause tape worms when a pet ingests a flea carrying the tapeworm larva while grooming itself. After ingestion, the tapeworm larva develop and move through the gastrointestinal tract. The parasite segments resemble small pieces of rice and may be discovered around the anal region of your pet. Flea Bite Anemia - occurs in severe flea infestations or in very young pets. When a flea bites, it feeds on blood. With many fleas feeding at the same time, significant blood loss can occur, resulting in severe anemia. Blood transfusions, iron supplementation and hospitalization are frequently necessary. Flea bite anemia may even be fatal to some pets. Treatment To effectively eliminate fleas and prevent re-infestation, you must break the flea life cycle by killing flea eggs and larvae, which make up 95% of the flea population. Spot topical treatments like Advantage and Frontline kill flea eggs, larvae and pupa. They will also kill and repel adult fleas.
