Canine Influenza
Our priority is to keep all our dogs safe and keep owners educated and updated on any news we hear concerning your dogs health. Due to the rising concern about H3N8 Canine Influenza, we have been in contact with different veterinarians in the area to get their opinions on wether or not vaccinating is necessary at this time. Although most vets are not carrying the vaccine and feel it is not a threat to this area, some feel it is a growing problem that will at some point become a threat if we do not begin vaccinating now. Eventually all vets may make it a part of routine vaccines for dogs that attend any training groups, daycare, grooming, boarding, dog parks, or bring pets anywhere they will come in contact with other dogs. We encourage you at this time to please discuss the pro's and con's with your regular veterinarian. We are not making this a mandatory vaccine unless you travel with your dog out of state mainly Florida, Pennsylvania and New York seem to be affected the most. We are not discouraging anyone from getting the vaccine now and feel it may even be a wise decision. We will continue to research this and encourage you all to do the same. We will keep all our clients informed on any new information we find on this. We will do what ever it takes to keep all our four legged guests protected even if it means making this a mandatory vaccine.
The vaccine is a 2 part, just like the lymes vaccine and one is no good without the other. After your dog receives the first shot you must go back 2-3 weeks later for the second one or you will need to restart the series in order for it to be effective.

WINTER WORRIES TO WATCH OUT  FOR!!!
Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.

NEVER shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking them out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
Keep your dogs OFF the ice. Most dogs that fall through are unable to be saved. If you do let you dog on the ice make sure they are connected to a long line so they can be pulled to safety if tragically the unthinkable happens.
Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside (This is NOT a recommended source of housebreaking if you overall goal is for them to eventually go outside). If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him-and his fur-in tip-top shape.

Dangerous things like coolant, antifreeze are lethal poison for dogs and cats that appear as a tasty treat to them. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. .
