SmartTip
Did you know you can...
Quickly add a new service location without having to use the Import Wizard?
Introduced in RouteSmart for ArcGIS 2010, our new Add/Edit Feature tool allows you to quickly and easily add or edit service locations, facilities, or seed points without having to import.

To add a new feature:
- On the RouteSmart Maintenance toolbar, click the drop-down menu to select the type of feature you want to add (service location, facility, or seed point). If a layer of that type does not exist, you will be asked if you would like to create one.
- Click the Add Feature button. The Add/Edit Feature window will appear.
- Enter all relevant information in the window.
- Click OK to add the feature without geocoding, or go to the Geocoding tab to geocode the new feature.
You can also point and click on the map to add a new feature using the Point and Click tool. See the RouteSmart for ArcGIS help document for more information.

 | RouteSmart's Plans for ArcGIS 10 Compatibility
| Recently ESRI announced that they would soon be releasing ArcGIS version 10, and that the software will be available for download at the end of June 2010. ArcGIS 10 contains many new features and represents a major migration effort to the .NET platform, not only for ESRI but for RouteSmart as well.
RouteSmart clients should plan their migration to ArcGIS 10 to coincide with RouteSmart's support of this new version. As mentioned above, compatibility with ArcGIS 10 entails migrating our code base to .NET. We are making good progress on this effort, but there will a necessary gap between the ArcGIS 10 release and our support of this version to allow us to make the changes required and test our release thoroughly. Our plan is to release a version compatible with ArcGIS 10 sometime in Q4 of 2010.
Remember - you must have an active subscription for ESRI software maintenance, as well as your RouteSmart maintenance, to upgrade to our version that will support ArcGIS 10. To take advantage of the latest advancements in routing and GIS technology, make sure to keep your maintenance current!
As always, you can determine at any time which versions of ArcGIS are compatible with RouteSmart for ArcGIS releases by checking our Product Compatibility Chart available on our web site. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact technical support at (800) 977-7284, option 2, or via email (support@routesmart.com).

 | Are You Backing Up Your RouteSmart Data? | He didn't have a backup.
 | Have you ever considered how much time, effort, and heartache you could save by ensuring that your RouteSmart data is backed up regularly? Our RouteSmart Technical Support Team has reported a spike recently in the number of clients reporting hardware failures who do not have their RouteSmart data backed up. When a hard drive fails or a computer crashes, we are often asked to assist in rebuilding the RouteSmart machine. We're glad to be of service in this capacity, and most often we can have a client back up and running fairly quickly.
The most critical piece of the puzzle is your RouteSmart data. If you
have a recent RouteSmart data backup available, your system and your work can
be restored in a reasonable amount of time. If no backup exists, we can
reinstall the applications but your work will be lost. We've seen that situation
occur all too often, and the impact is painful.
RouteSmart recommends a weekly (at a minimum) backup of RouteSmart data if you
use the software as a planning tool, and a daily backup if you use the software
in automated nightly routing. You should be backing up your entire C:\RS_Data
directory and all sub-directories, as well as C:\Program Files\RouteSmart Technologies\RouteSmart for ArcGIS and all subdirectories (with C: meaning the drive on which your
RouteSmart data resides). If you also have a WebAccess license, you should be backing up C:\Program
Files\RouteSmart Technologies\WebAccess and all subdirectories as well. And your backup data should be quickly and easily
retrievable.
She had a backup.
 | If you are currently backing up your RouteSmart data on a regular basis, you
should be fairly well protected against hardware failures. If you are not,
please contact your IT department as soon as possible and request that the
backups be scheduled immediately, as described above.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact RouteSmart technical
support at (800) 977-7284, option 2,
or email us at service@routesmart.com.
We hope you never encounter a hardware failure, but if you do, we hope our recommendations
make it much easier for you to recover.
