Did you know you can...?
Hide features in layer(s) based on any attribute(s)?

The Definition Query tab in a layer's Properties allows users to control which features in that layer are visible in the Data View. Just click on Query Builder button and write the query in SQL (similar to "Select by Attributes"). Only the features that are included in the query will be visible on the map.

For more information on Definition Queries, see ArcGIS Desktop Help.

Editor Wanted
Remember how, in our December issue, we told you we were no good at spelling? How we had originally misspelled the planned release month for RouteSmart for ArcGIS 2010 and then corrected the spelling to "February" in an attempt to set things right?

We are now in the market for an experienced newsletter editor. As it turns out, "February" was also an incorrect spelling. Through laborious research in libraries around the world, we have finally discovered that the correct spelling of the planned release month for RouteSmart for ArcGIS 2010 is "Soon."

Apparently we were using an old hieroglyphic translation of the dictionary and the ancient symbols were inadvertently misinterpreted. Rest assured that this mistake will not be repeated and the responsible parties have been suitably punished.

In the interim, how about a little preview to let you know about one of the tools that will be coming your way in this release?

Add/Edit Feature Tool
The Add/Edit Feature tool in RouteSmart for ArcGIS 2010

The Add/Edit Feature tool allows you to quickly and easily add, edit, or delete a record in your service location, facility, or seed point layer. When you add a new record and enter address information, the tool will automatically geocode the new record(s) as well, using an available locator.

For more details on the next release, make sure to attend our next "What's New" webinar. Look for registration links for this webinar in future issues of SmartDirections.  In addition, we'll publish all relevant details in our formal release announcement upon product availability.

Do I Need ESRI Maintenance?
We often hear this question from our clients: "Do I need to stay current on ESRI software maintenance, too?" They wonder whether both the RouteSmart and the ESRI maintenance are required. We already know the answer to staying current on RouteSmart maintenance, but what about ESRI?

The short answer is yes, you need to stay current on both RouteSmart and ESRI software maintenance. Your RouteSmart maintenance provides you with access to our technical support team, complimentary conference registration, complimentary eXpert Services hours, and in-version software updates, among other things. Your ESRI maintenance provides many of the same benefits from ESRI.

Here's the clincher - RouteSmart is committed to keeping our software current with the latest ESRI GIS platform. What that means is that with each new RouteSmart software release, we do our best to ensure that our software is compatible with the latest release from ESRI. In fact, often times our software will require one of the latest releases from ESRI. And unfortunately, there have been times when some of our clients have been unable to upgrade to the latest RouteSmart version because they did not keep their ESRI maintenance current.

So remember, when you receive those maintenance quotes from ESRI and RouteSmart, make sure you continue to subscribe to both. It's the only way to ensure you can receive the latest and greatest functionality.

(See our online Product Compatibility Chart for more information about RouteSmart compatibility with specific ArcGIS software versions. You can always find the latest information on the About Us > Documents page of our website.)
