The Create Viewer Window tool is located by default at the bottom of the Tools toolbar.

In our first feature we'd like to recognize Bill Schroeder and John Mazza of the Woodbridge Township Sanitation Department.
Bill and John (left) were recognized as Persons of the Year by the New Jersey Public Works Association (NJPWA) Region V's president, Bernie Peterson (right), on December 10, 2008. Using RouteSmart, Bill and John were able to revamp the Sanitation Department's routes so that they could take on Borough of Carteret's sanitation collection without having to hire any additional manpower. Woodbridge Township picked up eight additional routes, bringing the total number of routes they run to thirty-one. As of January 5, 2009, a new system that splits the Township into three solid waste zones and two recycling zones was implemented based on Bill and John's work. Solid waste is picked up Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, while recycling is collected on Thursday and Friday, assigning one day to each zone.
Woodbridge Township is beginning to phase in side-load collection this year as they work toward full automation. Once the routes are fully automated, there will be a reduction in the equipment used as well as routes run, saving the Township on both capital and labor expense.

RouteSmart Macro Language in Action

What are you doing with the RouteSmart Macro Language?
The RouteSmart Macro Language (RML) is a powerful tool that allows you to automate common RouteSmart tasks. For example, with RML, a multi-step process involving importing, geocoding, setting attributes, and running solvers can be encapsulated in a single RML script to streamline your workflow and save you valuable time.
Veolia Water Indianapolis
Charline Avey of Veolia Water Indianapolis is using RML to automate running numerous consecutive route solutions and produce summary reports. Charline says she often strings "five to six solutions to run back to back automatically versus having to do them one by one. It's faster, easier and more consistent!" Her next goal is to automate serviceman routes.
Republic Services
Michael Barletta of Republic Services, Inc., uses RML daily to load and evaluate all of their customers for geocoding and current route sequence. Every night, Republic runs a process to evaluate over 280 unique workspaces covering 21 states, with more than 11 million customers on managed routes. RML has a tremendous impact on his organization's productivity, Michael says. "Without RML, none of this would be possible. With only a few dozen scripts we can automatically import, geocode, sequence and export millions of records daily to the CIS. Managing this process takes less than an hour per day, with processing completed before most of my employees get to work and is accomplished with no full-time positions dedicated to these tasks."
How to Get RML
Any active RouteSmart client can leverage the power of RML. Once you attend the Introduction to the RouteSmart Macro Language class (through Routing University or on-site at your offices), we will activate RML on your RouteSmart hardware key and you can begin to use it immediately. RouteSmart for ArcGIS Version 9.3
We are pleased to announce the release of RouteSmart for ArcGIS 9.3. This version offers full compatibility with ArcGIS 9.3, Service Pack 1. As mentioned in a previous SmartDirections issue, chief among the new features are:
- Export Wizard - to more easily move data out of RouteSmart and back to your customer information systems
- Set Segment ID and Side Enhancement - to allow comparisons on various street attributes as well as the closest street geographically
- Street Notes - an ability to enter Street
Notes for a street segment that will be displayed on RouteSmart reports
(such as information on gated communities, traffic awareness, and so on)
Clients with active software maintenance who would like to upgrade to
RouteSmart for ArcGIS 9.3 should contact our technical support group
via email (service@routesmart.com) or phone (800-977-7284, option 2) to arrange for the update.
Important installation note: This version will require an upgrade
to all hardware keys if the currently installed version of RouteSmart
for ArcGIS is 9.2.4 or earlier. If you are on RouteSmart for ArcGIS
9.2.5 or above, no key upgrade is needed. Most hardware keys can be
upgraded remotely by our technical support staff.
RouteSmart WebAccess Version 3.3
We are pleased to announce
the release of RouteSmart WebAccess 3.3. This release is available to
all clients who currently have licensed RouteSmart WebAccess. Use of
the Street Notes capabilities also requires RouteSmart for ArcGIS
version 9.3.
RouteSmart WebAccess 3.3 contains:
- Street Notes - an ability to add Street Notes to a block face
- Geocoding Enhancements - now you can select service locations by geography, street side, or street and switch street sides
Important installation note: Clients with active software
maintenance who would like to upgrade to RouteSmart WebAccess 3.3 must
schedule an upgrade session with RouteSmart technical support. Contact us via email (service@routesmart.com) or phone (800-977-7284, option 2) to arrange for the update.
