| National Spelling Bee
Congratulations to our Lanikai Spelling Bee champions for 2011-12!
Hayley Johnson (4th Gr.) Kalia Ferri (5th Gr.) Alternates: Mattea Jergovic (6th Gr.) Benjamin Zinsius (3rd Gr.)
On Friday, January 6th, we held our first ever inaugural Spelling Bee, as part of the National Spelling Bee competition! Students, Grades 3-6 were selected by their classroom teachers to be class representatives. Using the National Spelling Bee Official Rules and Guidelines, we went through several competitive rounds to select our school representatives.
The Windward District Bee will be held at Le Jardin Academy, Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:30pm in the Wang Auditorium. If you can, come and cheer on our students! Other schools participating in our District are: Hawaii Baptist Academy, Hongwanji Mission School, St. Ann's Model School, St. Anthony's School, St. John Vianney Parish School and Le Jardin Academy. And of course us! Let's hear it for public charter schools!
As it was our first Bee, there were many lessons learned this year in terms of timelines, deadlines and protocols. For the families of students that participated, we sincerely apologize for not giving you the opportunity to see your child(ren) shine. They were all wonderful and you would have been very proud. If there is a parent out there who would like to help be a Spelling Bee volunteer for next year, please see me! It's never too late to start preparing! For more information, visit: www.spellingbee.com.

Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart will be held on Tuesday, 2/14/12 at 8:30 AM in the front parking lot. Miss Lowe distributed hard copies of the flyer/permission slips/pledge forms last week. Please ensure that you sign and return the permission slip before the day of the event. Fundraising is not required; all students will be encouraged to jump, with or without pledges. This is a great way to get kids moving and to educate them about the heart and taking care of themselves by staying active and eating a healthy diet. If you choose to participate in the fund raising portion of the event please click here to assist your child in setting up a secure website to accept pledges, this is the most efficient way to collect pledges for the cause.
The American Heart Association is looking for the most creative designs for next year's Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart t-shirts! Parents are encouraged to help their children submit their designs to the official online site by clicking here. Teachers can also help by providing class time for students to work on creating their artwork. The contest deadline for design submissions has been extended until February 2nd. Students will help CHOOSE the winning designs! From February 2nd - February 15th, kids all over the country will be able to vote on their favorite designs that were submitted. The winning Jump Rope and Hoops For Heart t-shirt designs will be seen by millions across the country on the 2012-13 Jump Rope and Hoops For Heart shirts.
Please make sure your child wears closed toed shoes, brings a water bottle and wears sunscreen on the day of the event. If you'd like to jump along with your child feel free to join us that morning!
