Update from the School Board and Finance Committee
|
The Finance Committee met in early March and discussed the following information:
The State House Finance Committee submitted its version of the state budget on 05 March 2010 and State Education as a whole (DOE) received approximately 10% in funding cuts compared to approximately 5% for Charter Schools. This is good news and on par with CSAO budget guidance. We do have a long way to go and many more legislative discussions before the budget is finalized. The Finance Chair will continue to monitor the bill's progress and work closely with the CSAO CFO to understand impacts to per pupil funding. The State Senate is considering a bill to supplement the State Budget with the "rainy day fund," but language in the most recent bill states that the additional funding for department of education will be for "non-school hour programs." This bill does not yet have appropriation levels included, nor has any official interpretation of this language been communicated.
Long term projections for School Years 10-11, 11-12, and 12-13 were also discussed with a specific focus on SY2010-2011. Specific items included: a. There are no "black" options, all realistic budget scenarios include deficit spending. b. If we are able to increase student population to 350, Lanikai will be able to weather a greater range of "per pupil" funding ($5000 to $5500) from CSAO. c. Every option requires at least $100K in fundraising in addition to the typical $75K raised for school trips and other activities. d. Stimulus funds are still a real possibility, but are not certain and may be restricted in their use. We should assume no more than last year and should be prepared for how to operate without them. (E.g. ARRA Part B funds are tied directly to and requested specifically for implementation of teacher and classroom development initiatives.) Click here to view the 3 year projection budget draft that was distributed at the March board meeting for public comment.

Recap of Charter School Day at the Capitol
|
On Monday, 3/28 Mr. Sauceda and our PCNC attended Charter School Day at the State Capitol. Hawaii Charter School Network (HCSN) sponsored the event, which is a great organization that advocates for charter schools. Approximately 100 people attended this event, including many students. The mission of the day was to meet with our Senators to put faces and names to the 31 charter schools that exist in the state and to relay stories about our schools and how important school choice and charter schools are. We also thanked them for continuing to keep us at the top of their minds when discussing funding challenges. Please click here to view HCSN website and to get involved in advocating for our school and all charter schools around the state.

Art Auction - Friday, April 30th
|
The Lanikai Elementary art department is holding our annual student gallery art show April 30th from 8am to 3pm as part of our May Day celebration. Artwork will stay on display through the next week during the same hours.
For the first time ever-all displayed student art pieces will be offered for sale as prints. We will also be offering arts and prints from local professional artists for auction. All proceeds from the print sales and auction pieces will directly benefit the Art Department. In a time when other schools are cutting art programs and furloughing on Fridays we at Lanikai are proud to have maintained a full week schedule and a full time art program for all of our students.

Garden in a bucket
|
This
year the Kindergarteners will get dirty to save the environment.
Pualani Ramos has extended her non-profit project to educate our youth
to reduce, reuse, and recycle to develop awareness and skills that will
help our planet Earth. On April 16 and 23, the Kindergarten classes
will give back to their community by using recycled items to beautify
their school/homes by creating a garden in a bucket. The students
learning will then be continued throughout the next grade levels. In
first grade they will use their previous knowledge as well as new
learning to develop a large garden. There are many more adventures down
the road for Lanikai students that will grow from a little seed in
Kindergarten to a full-blooming flower as they leave 6th grade.
The planting will take place during the times/dates listed below:
Friday April 16 from 1pm-2pm Friday April 23 from 1pm-2pm
The
kindergarten classes and teachers welcome any and all parent and
community volunteers to join our students during this event.
