News from the Principal
|
Our WASC visiting team headed by Mrs. Janet Torncello has been on campus since Monday afternoon and will be here talking with faculty and students through Thursday afternoon. We have greatly benefited from the wisdom that the WASC team has shared with us. Mahalo to all of our parents who were able to attend the parent meeting last night. Your input into the process is very valuable as we move through the accreditation process. I will keep you updated as I learn what our next steps are as a school community. I just received some updated information about a valuable parenting resource that I wanted to pass on to you. The Parentline.org is an organization funded by the state of Hawaii with a focus on assisting parents in a variety of ways. Please click on the link above to review their website which contains a wealth of information related to raising a healthy and happy child. There are also many links to additional organizations, newsletters, calendars etc. Take a look when you have a few moments to browse. Emergency service information and phone numbers are also highlighted for your use. Upcoming Parenting workshop- I plan to hold a workshop on Thursday, 3/4 at 7:00 PM to discuss different parenting styles. I am a licensed parent educator and look forward to spending some time discussing how our styles as parents affect our children. Please join me in the library for an interesting and informative session.

Jump Rope for Heart
|
Our Jump Rope for Heart event will be on Friday, 3/12 at 8:30 AM. Pledge packets or online donation printouts are due on Friday 3/26. Students can continue to ask for donations after the event and during spring break.
Please encourage your children to get out their jump ropes and start practicing some new tricks, as there will be some contests as part of the event. Jumping rope is great exercise and is very heart healthy. Challenge your kids to a jumping contest and have some family fun while doing something good for yourself!
Help us to obtain our goal of enrolling 10% of our students for online donation capabilities. Click here to to register for this easy and paperless process. By donating online the process is easier and less labor dollars are spent processing the paperwork, which in turn means more dollars for lifesaving research. Please encourage your children to use this option! All schools in Hawaii that get 10% of their students signed up for online fundraising will be entered to win a $100 US Games Gift Certificate. All you need to do is sign up for online fund-raising and Lanikai Elementary will automatically be entered in the contest once 10% of our students register.

Photos needed for yearbook
|
The new yearbook is in progress and we are requesting your photos. You can email photos to ndelauro@hotmail.com or burn them onto a disc. Please send them as a "file" attachment as opposed to a "picture" attachment so that they are not downsized in the process. In the email please include any pertinent info. We appreciate your help!
Attention 6th Grade Parents
We need baby photos of your child. You can deliver them in an envelope with the child's name to their teacher. The photos will be scanned and returned.

First and Sixth Grade Garden
|
Our first grade teachers along with our sixth grade science teacher recently applied for and received a $ 500.00 grant from the Kailua Outdoor Circle. The funds have been used to buy gardening supplies, dirt, gloves, shovels, etc. Parents came in over the last few weekends to help create the space and built a beautiful white picket fence.
The students have been busy planting, watering, and weeding their garden. The potted herb gardens will be auctioned off at the silent auction this spring. First grade students are learning about nature and growing their own food. Sixth grade students are participating by creating vermiculture or using worms to eat our garbage and create perfect soil for growing things! They are also doing experimental plantings and are using the results in their science class. Ask your first or sixth grader about their gardening experience.
The project thus far has been a huge success and we are now in the running for the grand prize of $ 1,000. Congratulations to all of our students, teachers, and parents who have worked together to make this project a success!
