Happy 2010! I hope that you all enjoyed the holiday season with family and friends. 2010 will be busy here at Lanikai. A few things to note are:
· A WASC review team will be visiting our school on 2/22-25 to review all of the documentation that our faculty has written and to look for evidence that we are on track. After this visit is complete we should learn about our accreditation status.
· I plan to host a monthly interactive parenting session starting on Thursday 1/28 at 8:15 AM. Sessions will last approximately one hour and are a great way to meet other parents and to learn some new parenting strategies. Please contact Ann Pederson, our PCNC, at 266-7844 by Tuesday, 1/26 if you are interested in attending.
· HSA Math and Reading testing for grades 3-6 will take place 4/12-16. Science testing for grades 4 and 6 will take place on 4/19-20.
· The NED show comes to Lanikai Elementary on 2/4. Two performances will be conducted and we are very excited to host this impressive show. See below for a brief description and a link to their website:
We are All for KIDZ™, Inc., producers of The NED Show, an inspirational 45 minute school assembly involving yo-yos, humor, audience participation, and academic motivation. The Power of NED™ As seen at the 2009 NAESP Convention, America's most popular school assembly, The NED Show, is now seen by nearly 2 million children each year in the United States, England, Australia, and Canada. We have also performed at the White House 11 times!
The NED Show will give teachers a valuable tool to help reinforce the good character traits they teach every day. Schools have found NED's message motivates students to achieve more academically, positively impacting their test scores. By hosting The NED Show, we are promoting key character traits for success in school and in life.Take a few minutes and check out our website for some examples of what we do.
Never give up (focus & persistence) Encourage others (kindness & shared learning) Do your best (diligence & excellence)

Science Fair/Science Fun Friday, 1/22/10 5:30-6:00 Dinner 6:00 Activities/presentations begin
|
On Friday evening, 1/22, Lanikai Elementary PCS will host a "Science Fair/Science Fun Event". Upper grade level students will present their Science Fair projects to their parents and families. In addition, many hands-on activities/experiments/demonstrations are being planned for all grade level students and their parents.
To make this event a success, we need your kokua. To find out how you can help, please plan on attending a volunteer meeting this Thursday, 1/14, at 6:00 PM in the library. No science experience required! We will have all the activities planned; we just need your assistance in running the activity.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase beginning at 5:30 PM, and activities will begin at 6:00 PM. This is not a drop off evening. Parents need to attend and engage in the activities with your children. Our Math Fun Night was a huge success. Let's build on that and have some fun with Science!

Board of Water Supply Poster Contest Deadline 3/10/10
| HELP CONSERVE WATER USING ONLY PENCILS, CRAYONS, AND IMAGINATIONS.
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is seeking entries for its 2010 Water Conservation Week Poster contest. Oahu's young and creative minds are encouraged to enter the poster contest (open to students in grades K-6) to learn about the importance of water conservation by illustrating this year's contest theme, "Stop the Drop," a theme focused on detecting sneaky water wasters - leaks!
Leak detection is an important and effective way to stop unnecessary water loss and conserve our precious resource. To help teach students about leak detection, the BWS has posted leak detection facts, supplemental worksheets, games and handouts on its website, www.boardofwatersupply.com, which teachers can incorporate in their lesson planning in conjunction with this contest.
Students entering the poster contest should submit one original piece of artwork that relates to the theme on a 12 x 18-inch piece of paper. Any art medium can be used, except chalk, charcoal, and oil-based crayons.
Entries must be submitted with a completed entry form by March 10, 2010, to the Board of Water Supply Communications Office at 630 South Beretania Street or to any satellite city hall on Oahu during normal business hours. The winning and honorable mention posters will be showcased at different venues across the island in 2010 as well as featured in the 2011 Water Conservation Calendar, which will be made available to the public at the end of 2010. The winners of the contests will also win savings bonds according to how they place.
The contest entry form was included inside of the BWS's 2010 Water Conservation calendar, which was delivered to all school offices for teachers in November. Complete contest rules, entry forms, the 2010 Calendar, and supplement educational materials are also available at www.boardofwatersupply.com. For questions or additional information, please call 748-5041 or email contactus@hbws.org.

Counselor's Corner

Dear Parents,
We welcome your children back to school after their well-deserved break. Not having to get your children up and out of the house, fed and washed, packed and ready for school each day surely gave you a break, too!
As you know, Principal David Sauceda and I have been co-teaching our School Safety/Anti-Bullying curriculum. The students have really been attentive and interested in learning how to feel safe and how to ask for help when needed. We will be continuing this program for the rest of the year. Some of the topics covered are "What Does Bullying Look Like", and "Tattling vs. Asking for Help." We use puppets, Molly and Muffin, for the younger grades, and the older students are asked to participate in small skits and role-playing. Ask them about what they have learned!
It is sometimes hard for us all to get back into the day-to-day school routine after a nice, long break. But I know that children like routines and schedules, and many students, as well as my own daughter, have told me how happy they were to be back at school.
As parents of elementary school children, you might start to hear and relate to the word "tween".
tween (twēn) n. A child between middle childhood and adolescence, usually between 8 and 12 years old.
[Blend of teen and between.] The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition Copyright © 2009 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved.
I would like to share an article I read about "tween" behavior. I have printed the beginning of it here, and you can read the rest by going to www.parenting.com.
7 Ways to Fix Rude Tween Behavior Tips to deal with your child's attitude as she grows into a teenager By Julie Tilsner, Parenting
When my daughter, Anna, got home from school the other day, I told her, "We've got to get you new shoes. Take a quick break, and then let's jump in the car." In response, my usually mellow and mild-mannered 12-year-old threw down her backpack and snapped, "Oh. My. God. I JUST got home and you're not EVEN gonna let me rest for five minutes? FINE! LET'S GO! "
"We don't have to leave this instant," I said. "Let me get you some iced tea."
"NO! I have to get in the car. COME ON!"
"Hey, calm down. You can rest a minute..."
"YOU rest! I've got to go somewhere NOW!" And she slammed out the door.
"What's wrong with her?" my 8-year-old asked.
"I think the hormones have arrived," I said.
Please go to the PARENTING.COM link to read on about what your 8 - 12 years olds are experiencing. And remember, through all of childhood and parenting, what the shrunken head on the Night Bus said to Harry Potter..."Hang on, it's going to be a bumpy ride!"
Again, please feel free to call me at 266-7844 X255, or email me at Julie_Halpern/LANIKAI/HIDOE@notes.k12.hi.us.
Looking forward to a happy and healthy 2010! Sincerely,
Julie Halpern Lanikai Elementary School Counselor
