Tis' The Season For Learning

Many of my greatest holiday memories are the sounds of laughter during the evenings playing board games around the dining room table with family members.  Without even realizing it, we learned numeracy skills while my mom had us help her double recipes to bake her scrumptious sugar cookies.  Below is a list of suggestions to help keep the learning going during the winter break.

I wish all of our Lanikai families all the best during this holiday season!

1.    Make a list, check it twice: As a family, write out lists together - wish lists to Santa, shopping lists or even New Year's resolutions!
2.    Watch a book: Recently released Disney's A Christmas Carol, The Polar Express, and various other holiday classics that are books and now movies.
3.    Signed, sealed, delivered: Do you have a stack of holiday cards that need to be posted? Ask your family to help you write out greetings and addresses.
4.    How many shopping days left?: When shopping for gifts or holiday party supplies, ask your kids to count out the change required to make your purchase. You can practice numeracy skills by keeping track of spending before you reach the cash register.
5.    Sing for literacy!: Sing carols in the car or bring out the karaoke machine for the family to sing. Singing encourages learning patterns of words, rhymes and rhythms, and is strongly connected to language skills.
6.    Dear Grandma: The holidays are a great time to write a letter or email to a loved one. Have everyone in your family contribute at least one paragraph on what they have accomplished over the last year.
7.    Holiday scavenger hunt: Create a list of holiday and winter-related items around your home. Give the list to your family and have them find all the items on the list.
8.    Jack Frost nipping at your nose: During the "cold Hawaii winter days", snuggle with a good Christmas book and a cup of hot chocolate. Don't forget the marshmallows!
9.    Make reading a key ingredient: Following a recipe is a great way to practice reading, comprehension and math skills. By baking holiday cookies or cakes, you can get the whole family involved.
10.    Start a family game night: Get your family together and play a game like Scrabble® or Monopoly® so you can practice spelling and counting! Make it a weekly event.

School Board News
Please be advised that the December Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, 12/15, due to the Holiday Program on Wednesday, 12/16.

We need you to attend this meeting to learn about how you can become engaged in fundraising activities for the school. Several fundraising task forces have been assigned and they will be reporting back to the board and the community on the feasibility of their ideas. To be successful in this financial climate, we will need to raise a significant amount of money. We cannot accomplish this goal with out a strong partnership with all parents.

As an added incentive, Mr. Sauceda has agreed to shave his head at the student assembly on Wednesday morning if we get 100% of our parents to come to the board meeting. This means one representative from every family.

Health Room Notes
Please be advised that H1N1 has been confirmed in many schools on the Windward side of Oahu. Our H1N1 Flu vaccine clinic will be held tomorrow, 12/10 from 8:30-11:30. The deadline to sign up was 10/30 and NO ADDITIONAL vaccines are available. Check with your child's Doctor or a local pharmacy if you were not able to register your child.

Our Health Aid, Ms. Gomes, has  put together a FAQ sheet regarding the seasonal and H1N1 flu for your reference. Please take a moment to review.

Please click here for general  information on flu prevention, treatment etc. Please click  here to  visit the Hawaii DOE site for up to date local information.

Always talk to your child's pediatrician if you have specific questions about your child's health status.
Winter Concert Wednesday, 12/16 6:00 PM
Our winter concert will take place on Wednesday, 12/16 at 6:00 PM. Please ensure that your children have had a bite to eat before arriving on campus.
Students need to be seated with their class by 5:50 PM. They must remain seated with their class during the ENTIRE performance. All students have worked very hard on their songs , so out of respect to all grade levels and students, please stay until the end of the program.

Students will need to take their chairs back to their classroom after the performance.

At that time please gather in the cafeteria for refreshments. PTSA will be serving, and providing beverages and paper products. We are asking parents to donate treats. Please drop them off in the cafeteria before the program.

Again, please stay for the entire show. You never know who might appear at the end of the performance??!!

Honolulu Theatre for Youth
Grades 3-6
Honolulu Theatre for Youth brings drama to Lanikai Charter School 3rd through 6th graders.   Famous for plays presented to children of Hawaii, HTY now offers children of Lanikai Charter School a program to create some drama of their own.  Two HTY professional Teaching Artists will conduct a twice-weekly drama class in which children will explore drama, learn about acting, create original stories and characters, and develop a small showcase to present at the end of the semester.  Designed especially with Lanikai's children in mind, this will be a dramatic experience they will enjoy, be enriched by, and not soon forget. Click here to learn more about this exciting opportunity and to print the enrollment form.

Enrollment forms are due on January 5th by 2:00 PM. No late enrollment forms will be accepted.
Fun Run and Pancake Breakfast - Monday, January 18

PTSA will host a Family Fun Run and Pancake breakfast on Monday, 1/18. The run/walk will begin and end at Lanikai Park. Registration forms will be available on-line after winter break. Mark your calendars for some Martin Luther King Day fun.
Rock Climbing Wall Update
Pacific Recreation is building a safe landing surface like the one on the JK
playground. We now need volunteers to help remove the pavers, construct a border, and level off the ground. Please email Mr. Masuda at masudasan@msn.com. Thanks to all the parents who have already assisted with this project. We are almost done!
Science Fair/Science Fun
Friday, 1/22
On Friday evening, 1/22, we will host a Science Fair/Science Fun event
here at school. Students will present their science fair projects to their parents and families. In addition, many hands-on activities are being planned for all grade levels. We will need your help, so plan to attend a volunteer meeting on Thursday, 1/7, at 6:30 PM. We will have the activities planned and tied to curriculum standards and will need you to assist in running an activity.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Our Math Fun Night was a huge success.  Let's build on that and have some fun with Science!

HI 5 Drive Monday 12/14-12/15
During drop off and pick up

This fundraiser will benefit the media center and supplies such as projector bulbs which can cost upwards of $80.00 per bulb.

In an effort to alleviate some of this hardship, we are asking parents
(and staff) to turn in their recyclables on the 14th (Monday) and 15th
(Tuesday) during the morning drop off and the afternoon pick-up at the
side of the cafeteria. We will sort them out for you and turn them in
to the recycling center. If anyone is interested in making a donation
to the 'media fund', please let Scott Ritchie know. You can contact him
at: westernindcorp@gmail.com.

We have quite a few student volunteers, but could really use a little
parental support, especially someone with a truck to help us haul to
the recycling center.
