1. Finance Update
October 5th, 2009
Dear Parents and Teachers,
At a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 20th (6:30pm), parents and teachers are invited to meet with Board members to further discuss priorities for next year. This meeting will be the third of several meetings being held for the purpose of identifying savings for this current school year and building a consensus within our community.
Please click here to view a draft of parent suggestions that they have prioritized for the school. At our next meeting, parents will determine for each selected idea the feasibility and potential value to the school. Thereafter, the ideas will be submitted to the community for feedback and they will be incorporated into the school budget.
Hope to see you on October 20th!
Louis Saint-Cyr President, Lanikai Public Charter School Board
2. School Survey Results
Dear Lanikai Community,
As you might remember, last April, our school asked QMark Research to conduct three evaluation surveys: a faculty and staff survey, a parent/guardian survey, and a student survey. Altogether, 47 faculty and staff participated, 70 parents/guardians participated, and 76 students participated in the surveys. We are very grateful that QMark conducted this research at no cost to the school as a community service.
The overall purpose of the surveys was to establish goals and specific objectives for school improvement and then to develop and implement improvement plans during the 2009/10 school year. Click here to view Qmark's summary of the results in a PowerPoint document. While overall satisfaction with all constituents was good, we do have areas where we can improve. Therefore, over the next few weeks, we will be discussing the survey with all constituents. This will lead to the development of action items in order to better improve the climate of our school. We look forward to your participation at our next Board meetings, staff meeting, and student focus groups.
Regards,
Louis Saint-Cyr Board President

| From the Principal's Desk
|
I am pleased to announce that through cooperation with JK parents, PTSA, and DOE, a new climbing structure has been purchased and is being installed on the JK playground. This will replace the structure purchased by parents that was not approved for school use by the DOE. A huge thank you to all of the parents who have donated time, talent, and money to make this new structure a reality.
The DOE is also addressing some repair/maintenance issues on our other two play structures. They will be on site to replace worn parts this fall.

Thanks to all of our Families who participated in the "Orbit Around Math" night. We had a fabulous turnout of over 250 people! Bob's Pizza sold 320 slices, and is donating $350 to the PTSA. What an awesome event for our kids! Through cooperation of the PTSA members and the school staff and faculty we pulled it off with less than a month of planning. Mrs. Pao's 4th grade class won the participation prize and now gets to choose its party that will be funded and hosted by the PTSA.

Big Island Fund Raising - Christmas Tree Sales
|
Our school, in conjunction with Habilitat, is selling Christmas trees to raise money for the Big Island trip. Please help the 4th grade families make this a success by ordering a tree or wreath and by sharing this opportunity with your friends and family. Your tree remains in refrigerated container until you pick it up! Habilitat's customer service is second to none and will assist you in selecting, trimming, stumping, baling, carrying, and tying your tree to the top of your car. Click here to view and print the flyer/order form. Deadline to place your order is: 10/22.

Rock Climbing Wall
|
The Military Adopt a School Program has graciously purchased a climbing structure for our school. We appreciate all that they do for us, and look forward to a continued partnership with the military. Some of our parents and staff members donated their time to assist with the installation. A huge mahalo goes out to the Vollert family - Brett, Leanne, Victoria and Zachary and to the VanDerKamp family - Barb, Spencer, and Nicholas. They took time out from very busy schedules and spent Saturday afternoon putting up the climbing walls. This is the first step in the process, as we now need to move the concrete pad and the wooden box out of the area. We will keep you posted as we move through the process.
