School Board and Principal News
The final Finance Forum will be held on Tuesday, 10/20 at 6:30 PM in the library.
This is your opportunity to do a final prioritization on how we as a school should focus our efforts on fund raising and what the funds should be spent on. Please attend the meeting and share your wisdom with our school community. We need your input as we face these challenging economic times.

Continue to monitor our homepage under Hot Topics for important updates on our funding status.

Below is the letter that was sent last week regarding the non-furlough status at our school. We will update you as quickly as possible as new information becomes available. We as a school community are committed to doing what is best for our students and families.

Dear Parents,

Please be advised that the Lanikai Public Charter School Board is committed to maintaining the present school year calendar for the remainder of the school year.
Classes will remain intact five days a week as currently scheduled and teachers will not be furloughed.  At this point, it is still unclear how the furlough will affect Special Education teachers who are paid by the Department of Education.  Our intention is to maintain present levels of Special Education services. We are committed to continue addressing ways to supplement the funding crisis to sustain current staffing, programs, and the academic success of our keiki.

Sincerely,

Louis Saint-Cyr, LSB President

David Sauceda, Principal

Emergency Pick-Up Procedures

1.    At the first hint of a situation that might call for emergency pick-up, all staff members will be asked to move their cars from the front parking lot to the back field in order to make room for more family cars.
2.    If an emergency pick up is required, parents will be notified by a telephone blast or other means.  A notice with directions will also immediately be placed on the home page of the school website.
3.    Parents must find a parking space in the school parking lot or on Alala Road. Drivers may not double park or park along the sidewalks between the office and the cafeteria or along the sidewalk leading out of the parking lot.  Lanes must be left for incoming and outgoing traffic and for wide emergency vehicles.
4.    Drivers must follow the directions of the school personnel designated to direct traffic during the emergency.
5.    Parents of children who walk or ride bikes to school must call the school switchboard (266-7844). Office staff will direct parents' calls to the classroom.  The teacher will ask if the child should go home or wait at school to be picked up.
6.    Children will remain in their primary classroom with their homeroom teacher until parents come to sign them out.
7.    Parents will not stop at the office for a visitor ID tag but will go directly to the classroom.
8.    Parents must show picture ID to the teacher and must sign the sign-out roster in the classroom.
9.    Parents must take children to their car immediately and leave the campus quickly so other parents have a place to park.
10.    If a parent cannot come to pick up a child, only the people named on the child's emergency card may take the child off the campus.  These people must show picture ID to the teacher and sign the sign-out roster.
11.    If someone other than the parent or a person named on the student's emergency card comes to claim a child, the child will be kept in the classroom until the parents have been contacted and given the child's teacher verbal permission to release the child to the person who has come.
12.    By the time that only a few children remain on campus, they may be collected in one classroom or in the library to wait for parents.  If necessary, they may be transported to another facility.  If parents find the classroom locked when they arrive, they should check with the office to learn where the children are waiting.
13.    If campus has been evacuated and children have walked to the top of the hill across Alala Road, parents should not attempt to drive up the hill but should follow the directions of school personnel or Civil Defense or police officers.
14.    If the campus will be evacuated and some or all children will cross Mid-Pac Golf Course, parents should drive to Paokano Loop off Iana Street in Enchanted Lake.  In this case the bridge over the canal will have been closed to some or all traffic.  As situations may be different, check the web for directions.
Health Room Update
Click here for more great information on the flu and how to prevent it. You should also monitor the DOE  website on a regular basis for updates on potential outbreaks around the island.

"Stop the flu at school" permission forms are due tomorrow, 10/1 in the Health Room. Please complete and return your form authorizing the
seasonal flu immunization for your child. The clinic will be held on 11/12, from 8:30 AM-11:30 AM.

The H1N1 vaccination clinic will be held on 12/10. The authorization forms have not yet been distributed. We will send them home in backpacks as soon as we receive them from the state.

Please keep reminding your children to wash their hands! We continue to remind them during the school day, as this is the primary way to stay healthy and keep the flu viruses out of our school community.   We all need to work together to do what we can to avoid an outbreak in our school.

"Orbit around Math"
Friday, 10/2 5:30-7:30 PM
Lanikai Elementary Public Charter School is organizing a Games Fun Night - "Orbit Around Math", Friday, October 2nd from 5:30-7:30 PM. Bob's Pizza will be catering dinner prior to the games. Pizza and a side salad for $3.00. Beverages will be sold for $1.00.

Raising math scores is a continual challenge for all schools. The Lanikai PTSA, staff, and parents are looking inward and getting creative in finding ways to improve the understanding and appreciation for the core fundamentals of mathematics. Parents and staff of Lanikai students working in cooperation with The University of Hawaii Graduate School of Education and other knowledgeable community leaders are organizing this evening of Math-based activities. We are expecting State Representative Chris Lee to help us in running the games
There will be a space theme surrounding the 24 activities, which were chosen to include all grade levels from Junior Kindergarten through the 6th grade. The evening is specifically designed to do the challenging, but not unattainable, make math fun!

We still need volunteers to assist with supervising games.  Please contact Scott Ritchie at 840-7032 and let him know how you can assist.

Hot Lunch Update

Due to the fact that Keolu Elementary caters our hot lunch in we will not be able to serve our regular lunch on their furlough days. The first scheduled furlough day is Friday, 10/23. On that day our student council will sell pizza and a beverage. We will work out a schedule for the remaining days and publish it in a future newsletter. Look for a pizza order form after fall break. Students that order hot lunch for the month do not need to fill out the form, they will automatically get the pizza lunch. The price will be $4.50.
National Chemistry Week

The Hawaii Section of the American Chemical Society is celebrating early at Windward Mall, Saturday, October 10, 2009.  The theme this year is "Chemistry - It's Elemental!"  The mission is to connect chemists with the local community and promote a positive perception of chemistry.

Several tables will be set up with fun hands-on activities to engage children in exploring everyday chemistry.  Participants include local businesses, schools and organizations.  An example of an activity is demonstrating the chemistry behind commercial products.   We are inviting children all ages and their parents to take part in celebrating chemistry.  A student poster contest will also be taking place during the day.
