| From the Principal's Desk
|
Below is a refresher on our drop off and pick up procedures as outlined in our Parent Handbook. Please review, as we understand that our parking lot can get very hectic during the morning and afternoon. Our number one goal is student safety and we are working hard to ensure that goal is met 100% of the time. Please click here to review the entire policy and procedure for drop off and pick up. AUTOMOBILE SAFETY for ARRIVAL, DISMISSAL and GENERAL GUIDELINES
Please observe a 10 MPH speed limit on campus.
Take direction from JPO or school employee when they are assisting with traffic flow. Their job is to ensure that your child arrives and departs safely.
Wear seat belts while driving on campus.
Do not use a cell phone while driving on campus. Staff members or JPOs may remind drivers.
All students, staff, parents, and visitors must use crosswalks and follow traffic rules.
The school is not responsible for the safety of children left on campus before 7:30 in the morning or after 2:30 (1:30 on Wednesdays) unless they are enrolled in an after-school program.
Children may exit their cars from the right and only along the sidewalks in front of the office-to-cafeteria area or along the hillside under the plumeria trees.
Note: Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 may be dropped off near the school's back gate at the far end of Alala Road. Younger children may NOT be dropped off there, as there may be no crossing guards or JPOs at that entrance.
AFTERNOON PICK-UP
School is dismissed at 2:10 PM except on Wednesday, when dismissal is at 1:10 PM. Students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades who have NO SIBLINGS in grades JK through 3rd may be picked up by the back gate on Alala Road. A school staff member is assigned to the back gate to assist students in grades 4, 5, and 6.
PICK-UP FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN WITH OLDER SIBLINGS Parents of Junior K or kindergarten students who have an older sibling in the school should designate an older brother or sister to meet the younger one at the close of the school day. Those children may then go to the pick-up spot where they have agreed to meet parents-but not at the back gate. Please include this information on the dismissal form you will be asked to fill out.
VERY IMPORTANT!!! FEDERAL SURVEY CARDS
You all should have received your Federal Survey Cards last week. Please be sure to complete one for every child you have enrolled at Lanikai and return in the enclosed envelope to your child's teacher. All cards are due in by September 22, 2009.

| Health Room Update
|
Click here for more great information on the flu and how to prevent it. You should also monitor the DOE website on a regular basis for updates on potential outbreaks around the island.
As we get closer to flu season it's important to try our best to keep our keiki healthy. We can all help stop the spread of infections with simple things such as washing our hands frequently and sneezing/coughing into our shirtsleeves. However, because children are in close contact with others, sicknesses can easily spread in school.
Parents please remember these guidelines so that we can ensure a healthy environment for all our Lanikai students:
1. Children need to be free of fever (without fever reducing medication) for at least 24 hours before returning to school. 2. If your child is having symptoms of illness in the morning or night before, please do not send them to school and rely on the health aide to call you if it gets worse. By then, infection has likely already spread. 3. If your child is ill for 4 or more consecutive days, a note clearing them from their doctor will be needed for them to return to class. You may also refer to your parent handbook to review all guidelines regarding illnesses and medications.

| Fall Photo Date-Monday, September 21
|
School picture day is Monday, September 21. This picture will be included in the yearbook; therefore, all students will have their picture taken even if you do not wish to purchase a package. Order forms were sent home on Monday. Please complete the form and send with your child on picture day. Instead of the traditional spring pictures this year, we will be offering a family and/or sibling photo shoot opportunity. This change is based on feedback received from many parents last year. A date for our Spring Family Photo Night will be announced later in the year.

PTSA NEWS
| Math Game Night- Date changed to Friday, October 2.
Our theme is "Orbit around Math" and games and activities will be centered on "space".
The evening will run from 5:30 PM-7: 30 PM. Pizza and salad from Bob's will be available for purchase and proceeds will help defray the cost of the activities. Please bring your children for an evening of fun and learning. The class with most students and parents in attendance will win a classroom party of their choice. This will be a great way to kick off Fall Break.
We still need volunteers to assist with supervising games. We also need a tumbler for kukui nuts so students can make abacuses.
Contact Ann Pederson at 266-7844 if you can help. We have approximately 20 activities planned, so we need 20 wonderful volunteers!
New PTSA Board Members will be announced at the meeting on Thursday, September 17th at 8 AM. Please plan to attend to learn more about what the group will be working on this school year. The October PTSA meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 7 PM.
Remind your child to wear their Lanikai tee shirt on Monday's. PTSA will spot check classrooms throughout the year and class with most tee shirts will win a class party. Tee shirts will be available for purchase at the September meeting.
Sally Foster order deadline has been extended through Monday, September 21. Order forms will be accepted in the school office until 3 PM on Monday.

PE News
|
The Marine Corps at Kaneohe recently donated a set of rock climbing walls for our students to use during the school day. We need to install them at the back of building A and we need your help to do so! We need volunteers to install brackets that would be permanently attached to the building. The climbing walls will be put up during school days so the students can improve upper and lower body strength while having fun and building confidence.
Please email Mr. Masuda at masudasan@msn.com if you can donate some of your time. This is a great opportunity for our students and we are grateful to MCBH for their generous gift.
