| From the Principal's Desk

Grade Level Open Houses were held at Lanikai during the past two weeks and deemed a success by those who were present. A huge Mahalo to all of you parents that were able to take time out of your busy schedules to come and meet your child's teacher. The presentations made by the teachers were creative and informative. If you were not able to attend I encourage you to make arrangements to meet with your child's teacher to become better informed of individual classroom expectations and policies as they relate to homework, make-up work, field-trips, teaching and learning. In order for your child to be successful, communication with the classroom teacher is very important, and will enable you to provide the needed support at home. Teachers always welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss your child's progress, just arrange a convenient time for both of you.
Thank you to all the teachers for a job well done!

| Health and Safety Update
|
As you may be aware, the seasonal and H1N1 flu viruses are expected to be prevalent this fall and winter. According to the CDC the single most important thing that you can do to prevent the flu or any virus is to wash your hands! We will be reminding your children to do so on a regular basis here at school. Please reinforce this message at home. Please request that your children wash their hands as soon as they get home from school; it is a great habit to get into. Click here for more great information on the flu and how to prevent it. You should also monitor the DOE website on a regular basis for updates on potential outbreaks around the island.
Our school will participate in the Stop the Flu at School immunization program this fall. We will offer the seasonal flu vaccine at no charge on 11/12. Consent forms were sent home in backpacks on Tuesday. Please complete the form and return to your child's teacher by 10/1. We will then offer the H1N1 vaccination in December, as the two vaccinations need to be administered one month apart. The specific date and forms for that vaccine will be published as soon as they are available.
Emergency Preparedness
Lanikai EPCS is prepared to communicate to you in the event of an emergency. In August, you should have received a welcome call from Mr. Sauceda using our emergency phone calling system. In the event of an emergency all the home and cell phone numbers that you provided on your student's emergency card will be called. This is a digital system and all numbers are dialed simultaneously. Please listen to all information carefully as you may be instructed on when and where to pick up your child if an emergency happens during the school day.
Please take a moment to refresh your memory regarding our evacuation plans, etc. Click here to view that information on our website.

| Fall Photo Date-Monday, September 21
|
Fall school photos have been scheduled for Monday, September 21. This photo will be included in the yearbook; therefore, all students will have their picture taken even if you do not wish to purchase a package. Watch your child's backpack for order forms. Instead of the traditional spring pictures this year, we will be offering a family and/or sibling photo shoot opportunity. This change is based on feedback received from many parents last year. A date for our Spring Family Photo Night will be announced later in the year.

Target Corporation Grant Opportunity
| The Target Field Trip Grants program provides funds for K-12 field trips in order to give students throughout the country the opportunity to explore more of the world outside the classroom. For the 2009-2010 school year, 5,000 grants of
up to $800 each are being offered. Types of eligible field trips include art, science,
and cultural museum visits; community service and civic projects; and
career enrichment opportunities. Funds may be used to cover
trip-related costs such as transportation, ticket fees, resource
materials, and supplies. Online applications will be available through
November 3, 2009, but we should get the applications in early.
Parents, let your teachers know your ideas!
