From the Principal's Desk
Two years ago our teachers and students embarked on Quantum Learning (QL), a practice that raises the level of schooling by minimizing the fear and risks associated with learning.  Most parents can probably remember the fear of being called up to "the board" by the teacher to demonstrate what they had or had not learned; or maybe they recall a teacher's negative or sarcastic comment in the classroom.  Quantum Learning helps teachers avoid creating situations like this because we know that children will either enjoy learning or they will develop anxiety about learning.  This year, QL will focus our attention on its 8 Keys of Excellence, which are listed below, as the essence of teaching and learning at Lanikai.
We are intentional in creating an environment of accomplishment, and as the year goes on, you will notice us "celebrating" a lot.  Most commonly, you'll hear about the "power whoosh." If you don't know what that is, ask your child, and please discuss these keys with your child and use them as an opportunity to share principles that have helped you as a parent achieve your own success.

1. Integrity: Conduct yourself with authenticity, sincerity and wholeness. Your values and behavior are aligned.

2. Failure Leads to Success:  Understanding that failures simply provide you with the information you need to succeed.  There are no failures, only outcomes and feedback.  Everything can be useful if you know how to find the gift.

3. Speak with Good Purpose: Speak in a positive sense, and be responsible for honest and direct communication.  Avoid gossip and harmful communication.

4. This is it: Focus your attention on the present moment, and make the most of it.  Give each task your best effort.

5. Commitment: Follow through on your promises and obligations; live your vision.  Do whatever it takes to get the job done.

6. Ownership: Take responsibility and be accountable for your actions.

7. Flexibility:  Be open to change or a new approach when it helps you get the outcome you desire.

8. Balance: Keep your mind, body and spirit in alignment.  Spend time developing and maintaining these three areas.

Counselor's Corner
Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year at Lanikai Elementary School. Like some parents, I am new to Lanikai and I have already been impressed with the friendliness and professional caliber of the teachers and am pleased, as well, to observe a happy, friendly group of students!

To tell you a little bit about myself, I have been a school counselor in Hawaii for twelve years. I have a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University and have received K-12 School Counseling Certification from the State of Hawaii.

On a personal note, I am married and have a wonderful stepson who has graduated from college and is pursuing higher education and a career, and a beautiful daughter from Cambodia who is entering 7th grade.

From my experience and my children's, elementary school is a time and a place to be cherished.

While many students have already found my room and have been coming in during lunch or recess to get to know me, I will soon be starting more formal groups to help students who may be experiencing typical childhood difficulties with issues such as divorce, loss, self-esteem and friendship. A teacher, a parent, or the students themselves may refer any child to a group. I will be sending home a form to be signed by you for permission for your child to be part of any of these groups.

In the meantime, please feel free to call me at 266-7844 X255, or email me at Julie_Halpern/LANIKAI/HIDOE@notes.k12.hi.us.

I look forward to meeting you and your children this year!

Musical Notes
Aloha Lanikai Ohana,

My name is June Wigglesworth and I am the new Music teacher at Lanikai Elementary.

This year we will explore and learn the elements of music through a
variety of methodologies.  The elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, form and timbre or tone color will be learned through the skills of singing, moving, listening and playing instruments. We will also learn the music of our own and other cultures.

The music program will include patriotic and traditional songs, spirituals, folk songs, classical and popular styles, and music pertaining to universal holiday celebrations throughout the year. I also teach the historical context and cultural importance of these types of music.

I use the Silver Burdett Music Curriculum, which conforms to the National Standards for Music Education and Hawaii State Music Standards. The Orff method of instruction is also employed. The music curriculum that I use is multi-culturally diverse, as well as culturally sensitive.  This style teaches musicianship through movement and playing of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments. I also teach sight singing of melodies through the Kodaly method.

During the year, second grade level and up will have the opportunity to learn to play the recorder and/or the ukulele.

Following the long-standing Lanikai tradition, Holiday and Spring Performances will be presented. The themes will be established at a later date.  In these performances, the students will showcase great choral singing and playing of instruments, and there will be an incorporation of some folk dance.

I look forward to an exciting and educationally stimulating year here at Lanikai Elementary.

Sincerely yours,

  June Wigglesworth, Music Teacher
