Letter to Manny on his first NAVHDA test

Dear Manny,

You are so much better than I let you be at your first NAVHDA Natural Ability test. So many distractions that you hadn't been prepared for, a driving, drenching, bone-chilling rain, and  stressed owner who let it show. I'm sorry.

Less stressful times

You did your best, when you could figure out what I wanted from you. But when your pent-up energy and my tension met, they created a perfect storm on the field. Judges called it "willful mutilation of a game bird as to be unfit for the table" and we were out. They did their best to help you - and me - do things right after that, but we weren't in the running for any kind of prize after you reduced that chukar to its component parts.

Yes, it is a test of your genetics, designed to find out if your family tree is fruitful. But more training from me would have helped bring out your instincts, or at least insulate you from the distractions. You shone in so many areas: searched in that high-energy balls-out way that shows so much joy, pointed like a champ in that downpour, tracked a pheasant 50 yards then pointed it. But one slip and we were off the "A" list - for that day.Read more ...

Mondays may not be your favorite day of the week, but at least most time you are refreshed, reinvigorated and ready to face the

Work, fun, what's the difference?

work ahead, if you had the weekend off. You know the opposite: if you worked all weekend, you're probably not at the top of your game when you clock in on Monday morning.  I know I'm not (this, written after a long weekend working.)

Buddy and Manny are the same way, they need a break from training once in a while. There's only so much of their undivided attention I can expect. So I give them a "weekend" too. Read more.

Another great deal:

Jason Ostrander, operator of Gray Reef Outfitters in Wyoming, is hosting Wingshooting USA later this fall. He writes:

News from Hollywood

Footage from Wingshooting USA has recently been purchased for use in two major Hollywood productions. Bird hunting and gun dog footage will be used in Ben Stiller's new comedy feature film "30 Minutes or Less," slated for an August release, and in an episode of the NBC comedy "Parks & Recreation." Past productions using our footage include the feature film "Flicka 2" and ABC television series "Castle." Watch for it!

Greetings!

As I write this, the snow is falling again here in Central Oregon. What spring? But training is in full swing, Buddy and Manny both learning every day and special focus on Manny's retrieving and steadiness. What's in your plans for the day that will get here soon, when the sun shines brightly and you can walk the dogs in shirtsleeves?

Maybe you're in testing mode, whether it's AKC, NSTRA, NAVHDA ... they're all good for both the dogs and their humans. I've made many friends and learned so much preparing for and taking my dogs to test. You will too. Consider at least attending one to see if there's a fit.

Of course, the fly rods are calling as well. Once the water drops a bit, I hope to re-acquaint myself with some of the trout around here. But here, and now, it's all about dogs, birds, and the places we go. Read on!

And if you're not following my blog, you're missing out on great video, behind-the-scenes information about Wingshooting USA, training tips, places to go, and FREE gear. Go here to subscribe, it's free too!

See you in the uplands,

Vegetables and vegetation ...

I hunted a while ago with a guy who didn't praise his dog all day. Now maybe I overdo it, but a little "carrot" (treats, verbal praise) helps balance out the "sticks," (e-collar, yelling) doesn't it?

In my Bird Hunting Boot Camp seminar, I ask everyone: What works as reward, and as "correction?"

My reward list starts with food treats, and ends with something that everyone nods their noggin at in agreement, after slapping their forehead: let your dog hold that savory, sweet-smelling, lovely to taste bird just a bit before snatching it from him. Isn't that what life is all about for a bird dog?

What's on your list of rewards, and "corrections?"

Bye bye van; hello Ram

Okay UPLAND NATION, time to get your hands greasy and your heads into a creative place. Let's trick this truck.

Van at tumalo res

It's history

It's pretty basic now, but that's how I like things - at least to start. My wife the painter first puts down a layer of white gesso on every canvas, then starts splashing on the colors ... lots of them. Like her blank canvas, this rig is white. Now the fun begins.

It's a 2011 Dodge Ram (yes, that thing has a hemi), half-ton chassis, crew cab. Besides your great personalized license plate suggestions, what would you put on, pull behind, stack up, or otherwise do to this truck to make it the ultimate bird hunting rig? Practical, sure. Just plain cool stuff? You bet. What do you wish you'd spec'd out on yours? What have you seen that is now on your wish list?

Let's get started

You make the suggestions. Then I'll start making the calls. We'll all see the results next year on Wingshooting USA.
