GCC Plans 2011 Cancer Summit
June 16 & 17 in Macon
The year 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the declared "War on Cancer," with the passing of the National Cancer Act and the creation of the National Cancer Program. The 2011 Georgia Cancer Summit gives state leaders in cancer control and research the opportunity to "Look Back" at advances in biomedical science and technology and "Move Forward" to future initiatives in this ongoing battle.
This year's symposium will include panel discussions on growing federal priority areas; oral and poster presentations on cancer research in Georgia; and updates on the GCC's 10-year statewide cancer initiatives. The program will be held at the Macon Centreplex Coliseum and Convention Center, with accommodations at the Marriott Macon City Center. Registration fees are $75 for researchers, physicians and professionals and $50 for students and fellows.
J ohn Seffrin, who has been CEO of the American Cancer Society since 1992, will be the keynote speaker at dinner Thursday, June 16.
Dr. Seffrin spearheaded the creation of the ACS Cancer Action Network; helped create the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids; was appointed to the National Cancer Policy Board for the Institute of Medicine, a charter member of C-Change, and Co-Chair of the National Cancer Legislation Advisory Committee; and currently serves on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
