HIE grant awarded to DCH, GCC for Consumer-Mediated HIE in Rome

Rome HIE grant media conference
The Georgia Cancer Coalition and the Department of Community Health hosted a media conference in Rome to
announce the $1.7 million Health Information Exchange (HIE) Challenge Grant awarded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).  The grant will be used to develop patient-centered technology and processes that will give patients access to, and a degree of control over, their health information as an essential, central partner on their healthcare team. This health information exchange will be developed by the healthcare providers in Rome (Floyd County), initially focusing on serving their cancer patients. Partners working on the grant are Harbin Clinic, Floyd Medical Center and Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Georgia's SEER Registry Goes Statewide Thanks to NCI Funding

In a major advance for cancer surveillance activities in Georgia, the Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics (GCCS) at Emory University was successfully funded by the National Cancer Institute to expand the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Registry from operating in Metro Atlanta to full statewide coverage. According to Kevin C. Ward, PhD, MPH, CTR, GCCS Director, this additional funding will enhance the timeliness, quality and completeness of cancer surveillance data; support active follow-up of patients for statewide survival analyses; expand coverage and implementation of electronic pathology reporting; augment registry data with linkages to external sources;  and provide new channels for data utilization and dissemination.

Emory Explores New Proton Therapy Facility for Advanced CA Treatment

Emory Gantry Room Proton Therapy Emory Healthcare signed a letter of intent with Advanced Particle Therapy, LLC, of Minden, Nevada, opening the door to a final exploratory phase for development of The Georgia Proton Treatment Center - Georgia's first proton therapy facility.

For certain cancers, proton therapy offers a more precise and aggressive approach to destroying cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, as compared to conventional X-ray radiation. Proton therapy involves the use of a controlled beam of protons to target tumors with precision unavailable in other radiation therapies. According to The National Association for Proton Therapy, the precise delivery of proton energy may limit damage to healthy surrounding tissue, potentially resulting in lower side effects to the patient. This precision also allows for a more effective dose of radiation to be used.

SurvivorLink: Site Helps Childhood Cancer Survivors & Providers Link

A substantial proportion of survivors of childhood cancer can be at risk for health problems after cancer treatment.  Many of these health problems are late effects of cancer therapy.  All survivors should visit a childhood cancer survivor clinic when they are two or more years off treatment.  During this visit, survivors will get a Survivor Healthcare Plan (SHP) which includes information about the survivor's cancer diagnosis and treatment, a summary of the specific late effects that can occur after the type of treatment they received and a list of the tests that should be done to screen for those late effects.

Researchers, engineers, doctors and nurses from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Tech and HIMformatics, LLC built SurvivorLink. The website www.cancerSurvivorLink.org   is designed to help survivors of childhood cancer share information about their cancer treatment and risk for future health problems with their primary and specialty healthcare providers. SurvivorLink is a safe and secure site for survivors to store their health records including their SHP. Survivors can allow their healthcare providers to view their health records on the website which will help their providers better understand their cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Nip It in the Butt campaign reaches thousands of students in SE Georgia

Savannah's Curtis & Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute (ACI) at Memorial University Medical Center's "Nip It In the Butt:  Breathing in the Truth About Tobacco" education campaign has reached more than 19,000 school aged children in Southeast Georgia in the last six months, and the numbers continue to build thanks to the hard efforts of Meghan Beytagh, Community Educator for the program.  This Georgia Cancer Coalition via the Southeast Georgia Cancer Alliance-sponsored grant project has been a tremendous success and well received by educators and students alike.  The ACI invites you to visit their web page to view the video that was produced, along with the companion pamphlet, silly bands, and coloring book that compliment the message that has been shared in the school rooms.

For further information on the program, contact Sue Adler at 912/350-8527 or www.memorialhealth.com/nipit.
