Community Agencies Awarded Funds From Breast Cancer License Tag Sales

In an effort to improve breast cancer services for the state's uninsured population through the Georgia ACTS (Access, Care, Treatment and Services) Breast Cancer Grant Program, the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) awarded $996,939 to 12 community organizations in 2010. Part of the statewide Breast Cancer License Tag Fund Initiative, the program provides grants to organizations offering breast cancer health promotion, screening and treatment to indigent women.

Grant amounts range from $25,000 to $50,000 for screening projects and up to $200,000 for treatment projects. Community organizations that applied for treatment grants were required to demonstrate strong, comprehensive partnerships with various health care providers to provide breast cancer services to underserved populations.Awardees include:

  • Central Georgia Cancer Coalition
  • DeKalb Medical Center's "WOW Program"
  • Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence at Grady Memorial Hospital
  • Meadows Regional Medical Center
  • Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition
  • St. Joseph's Mercy Care Services
  • The Athens Nurses' Clinic (ANC)
  • The Center for Black Women's Wellness (CBWW)

 Colorectal Cancer Screening Update

CDC logo To increase colorectal cancer screening, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has developed a model focusing on public education and outreach; provider education and training; systems change through partnerships; and patient support. For Georgia, the CDC grant was awarded to the Department of Community Health's (DCH) Division of Public Health (DPH). They have contracted with the Regional Cancer Coalitions of Georgia and the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
GCC is charged with coordinating participation in Metro Atlanta and Northeast Georgia.  According to GCC Chief Financial Officer Alan Wills, four hospitals have been selected to kick-off the program: Dekalb Medical Center, Grady Hospital, Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Northside Hospital. Providers there will be trained in the evidence-based "Colorectal Cancer Screening Intervention Program" designed by Morehouse School of Medicine. Over the next few years, ten additional hospitals will be added.

The target audience is unisured and under-insured Georgians, age 50 to 64 years old.
