 Atlanta To Host Alliance of State Pain Initiatives Conference October 21-23: "Decade of Change" Oncology health care professionals interested in improving the care of patients with pain may want to attend the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives 21st Annual Meeting October 21-23 at the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead. The Georgia Pain Initiative is a program sponsor; Dr. Matthew Mumber, a GCC Distinguished Cancer Scholar and President of the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (GASCO) will speak on "An Integrative Approach to Cancer Pain."
The Alliance of State Pain Initiatives (ASPI) is a network of interdisciplinary, state-based organizations dedicated to improving the care of persons with pain.

| GCC Distinguished Cancer Scholar Named
Health Care Hero for Community Outreach
Dr. Sheryl Gabram-Mendola, a GCC Distinguished Cancer Scholar, was the "Community Outreach" winner in the 2010 Atlanta Business Chronicle Health Care Heroes Awards. She was honored for her work in reducing breast cancer mortality in minortiy women at the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady Memorial Hospital, where she serves as Director. Dr. Gabram is also the Deputy Director of the Georgia Cancer Center of Excellence at Grady; Professor of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine; and a Breast Surgical Oncologist at the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. |
Gordon Hospital earns COC accreditation
The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted three-year accreditation with commendation to the cancer program at Gordon Hospital in Calhoun, following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor.
"Earning this accreditation is an important accomplishment for our cancer care service at Gordon Hospital," says Pete Weber, president and CEO.
"This is another step toward consistent quality cancer care throughout our region," adds Gena Agnew, Executive Director of the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition. "The NWGRCC congratulates Gordon Hospital on this significant achievement." |
Lewis Hall Singletary Oncology Center opens at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville
The Lewis Hall Singletary Oncology Center at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasvillle, GA, opened on August 2. The newly renovated facility brings together medical oncology, radiation oncology, a Gamma Knife Center and other cancer treatments and coordinated patient/family care, all under one roof. Its close proximity to Archbold Memorial Hospital ensures the ready availability of other medical and surgical services.
Construction of a new oncology center began in May 2009, made possible, in large part, to a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hall Singletary and hundreds of other donors.

Regional Cancer Coalition Report
NWGRCC and Blue Ridge AHEC Inititate Online Training for RN, SW & CHW Navigators
The Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition and Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center have implemented an online Cancer Care Nurse Navigator training program for registered nurses and Cancer Services Navigator training for Social Workers and Community Health Workers. Nursing and social work credits will be awarded for completion.Course work -- which includes 13 units with 2 to 10 modules each -- can be completed online at the student's own pace. Participants are given a notebook to fill in as they watch video seminars and download powerpoints. Tests are given at the completion of each unit and an exam is given at the end of the program.
