2010 Cancer Research Awardees Named

Six cancer researchers have been selected by the Georgia Cancer Coalition as recipients of the 2010 Cancer Research Awards, made possible through voluntary donations to the Georgia Cancer Research Fund on State Income Tax forms.
Awardees, selected from twelve proposals, include Khalid Salaita, Ph.D, of Emory University School of Medicine; Yuan Liu, Ph.D., of Georgia State University; Ravi Bellamkonda, Ph.D. of Georgia Institute of Technology in collaboration with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta; Muthusamy Thangaraju, Ph.D., of the Medical College of Georgia; Robert McKallip, Ph.D., of Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon; and Zachary Wood, Ph.D. of the University of Georgia. Each will receive a one-year, $50,000 grant.

This is the first year that Cancer Research Awards were made available to study all types of cancer. Legislation passed in 2009 removed prior restrictions to research in the areas of breast, prostate, or ovarian cancer.  Read more.

To Screen 75 Women for Breast Cancer
Seventy-five low-income women, who haven't had a mammogram in more than two years, will be screened in the coming weeks thanks to the "Breast Health Link" program of the West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition.  The program works through churches in West Point, Hogansville and LaGrange. Coalition staff recruit and train Community Health Advocates from each church, who, in turn, recruit women who meet the screening criteria.  Last year, 179 women were helped. For details, contact Cancer Care Access Coordinators Carol Coakley-Hall at 706 660-0317 or Healther Peake in LaGrange at 706-812-2370.
