2009 Cancer Research Awardee Cancer Research Symposium poster 2008

Thanks to the Cancer Research Award she received in 2009, Michele Dawson, assistant professor at Georgia Tech's School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, has purchased reagents, hired students and set working protocols critical to her research on genetically engineered stem cell therapeutics for treating cancer.
Her recent findings demonstrate that tumor secreted soluble factors increase stem cell migration by altering the mechanical properties of the cytoskeleton.
"To apply for National Institute of Health or Department of Defense funding (which she has), we need a great deal of preliminary restults," Dawson says. "The GCC money has helped make this possible."
Dawson joined Georgia Tech in Fall, 2009, after having completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Massadchusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.  The Cancer Research Award was her first funded grant.

Awards Fund Research on All Cancers

This year, Cancer Research Awards made possible by the State Income Tax Check-Off can be awarded to researchers studying any type of cancer. Legislation passed in 2009 broadened the Georgia Cancer Research Fund awards to better reflect Georgia's comprehensive approach to cancer research.

Funding had previously been restricted to scientists in Georgia doing research into the causes, treatments, and cures for breast, prostate, and ovarian cancer. Initiated by the Georgia State Legislature in 2000, the program has generated 55 awards with funding of more than $2 million dollars.. Each dollar awarded is matched by the scientist's university, resulting in a $4 million impact on cancer research in the state. Cancer Research Awards provide seed money for pilot studies which have the potential of attracting larger, more prestigious national grant awards.

Legislators Promote Checkoff Program

2010 Income Tax Checkoff media conference Sen. Gail Buckner, center, was joined by Rep. Barbara Reece (far right) in promoting donations to the Georgia Cancer Research Fund at a recent press conference. Cancer Research Awardee Michele Dawson, PhD, (see story above) and Bill Todd, President and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition, were on hand for the event.
Legislation authorizing the Georgia Cancer Research Fund was was authored by Senator Buckner in 2000.
