Kathelen Amos Elected Georgia Cancer Coalition Board Chair
Kathelen V. Amos, President of the Aflac Foundation, and an ardent supporter of pediatric cancer programs in Georgia and around the country, has been elected to Chair the Georgia Cancer Coalition Board of Trustees for 2010-12.
Amos has been a Georgia Cancer Coalition board member since 2002 when she was Executive Vice President, Director of Corporate Communications and Deputy Counsel at Aflac, which she joined in 1985. In 2001, she initiated Aflac's unprecedented charitable contribution to the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. To date, that support has grown to $47 million. "The Georgia Cancer Coalition is honored to have the business acumen, leadership, and personal commitment of Kathelen Amos as Chair. Regional Cancer Coalition Report
Southeast Georgia Cancer Alliance Created Mother-Daughter Cervical Cancer Education
The Southeast Georgia Cancer Alliance's (SEGCA) Cervical Health Education Program served as a catalyst for age-appropriate women to seek pap smear testing and HPV vaccination. The "Mother-Daughter Evening Out" instructive approach has been replicated by five of Georgia's regional cancer coalitions and in other parts of the country. Working with the Coastal Health District and three school district representatives, the public health educational effort addressed cervical cancer with 9th grade girls and their mothers.
School nurses and local public health experts facilitated and presented information on appropriate pap testing, the HPV vaccine and healthy sexual choices and provided participants with cervical cancer prevention tool kits. For details, contact James F. Repella, Ph.D, SEGCA's Executive Director at drrepella@memorialhealth.com.
