Georgia's NCI-designated Cancer Center, Emory WCI, Names Dr. Walter Curran New Director
Walter J. Curran, MD, has been named executive director of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, succeeding Brian Leyland-Jones, MD, PhD, who stepped down to pursue research interests. A Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, Dr. Curran has served as the Lawrence W. Davis Professor and Chairman of Emory's Department of Radiation Oncology and as chief medical officer of Emory Winship. Curran joined Emory in 2008. He currently serves as Group Chairman and Principal Investigator of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a National Cancer Institute-funded cooperative group, a position he has held since 1997. Fadlo R. Khuri, MD, has been named Deputy Director of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute. He is also a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar and chairman of Emory's Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology. Read more
Dr. Curran will speak at the Georgia Cancer Coalition's 2009 Cancer Research Symposium on Thursday, November 5, giving an update about the status of Emory Winship Cancer Institute.

Cancer Patient Navigators Steer Organization of Statewide Group 
A Steering Committee of 12 diverse cancer patient navigators from around the state of Georgia met at a retreat October 2 & 3 to discuss the mission, vision and values of the new group: the Cancer Patient Navigators of Georgia. Parent organizations birthing the group are the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (GASCO) and the Georgia Cancer Coalition. NCI Set To Extend St. Joseph's/Candler's National Community Cancer Centers (NCCCP) Program
 St. Joseph's/Candler and the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion in Savannah could receive an additional year extension to its three-year designation as a National Cancer Institute's (NCI) National Community Cancer Center's Program (NCCCP), based on its successful completion of its third year goals. One of only ten health systems in the nation selected for NCCCP in 2007, the Georgia pilot program has been studying ways to provide access to scientific advances in the community setting.
With support from the Georgia Cancer Coalition, the program has a clinical alliance with the John B. Amos Cancer Center in Columbus and the Harbin Clinic in Rome. A recent collaborative study involves the effect of navigation services on the timeliness and access for patients with breast cancer. . Read more about NCCCP at SJ/C here.

Survivorship Program Leaders Seek Statewide Collaboration
A group of professionals involved in Cancer Survivorship across the state asked the Georgia Cancer Coalition to facilitate Survivorship Program networking, sharing of best practices, and collaboration, in a concerted effort to support the development of new, quality cancer survivorship programs in Georgia. Anyone who is passionate about Cancer Survivorship programs and motivated to be a part of the process should email survivorship@georgiacancer.org with his or her name, title, organization, address, phone and email address.

Andrew von Eschenbach addresses GCC Board of Trustees
Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach addressed the GCC Board on The Future of Cancer Care: A Unique National Perspective at their October meeting. He congratulated the GCC for developing a model for statewide collaboration in cancer. From his unique viewpoint as a former director of the National Cancer Institute & former commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, he enlightened the Board as to some of the revolutionary challenges that lie ahead in cancer control in the state, national and global arenas. Dr. von Eschenbach was intrumental in formulating the Prostate Cancer Foundation and C-Change, a forum that brings together the principal leaders of key national cancer organizations. In 2006, he was voted one of Time Magazine's 100 People Who Shape Our World. |

Cancer Screening Expands in Southwest Georgia
The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition's Community Cancer Screening Program, funded in part by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, is expanding in November. In addition to providing breast, cervical, prostate and colorectal cancer screening in Terrell, Early and Baker counties, the program will be offered in Dougherty County through Albany Area Primary Health Care Inc. Senior Project Coordinator and Community Health Navigator Rhonda Green facilitates cancer screening services for uninsured and underinsured southwest Georgia residents by coordinating screening alerts, patient education, transportation needs, screening preparations, reminder calls, and post-screening follow-up. She and two additional Navigators also perform outreach to residents attending health fairs in the communities served. In cooperation with local health departments that offer breast and cervical cancer screening, since 2007 the program has served more than 573 men and women who receive primary care at participating community health center patients. Emory Prevention Research Center Awarded $6.2 Million CDC Grant towards Cancer Prevention
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded the Emory Prevention Research Center (EPRC) $6.2 million in a five-year grant renewal. The new grant award will enable EPRC, housed at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, to continue its mission to prevent cancer and reduce health disparities among residents of rural southwest Georgia. Established in 2004, EPRC is one of 35 CDC-funded Prevention Research Centers nationwide working as a network to conduct disease prevention research and promote public health in partnership with communities. EPRC partners with the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition and a Community Advisory Board to conduct research, offer training, share research results, and provide evaluation technical assistance to organizations in 33 counties of rural southwest Georgia.
