2010 RFP Open for New Scholars
Outstanding researchers and clinicians involved in cancer research, prevention or treatment are invited to work with a state non-profit organization or university in applying for the 2010 Distinguished Cancer Clinicians and Scientists (DCCS) program. Deadline for submission of proposals is 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 31. Applications are being accepted through proposalCENTRAL at https://proposalcentral.altum.com/

Cancer Research Awards Announced Eight Georgia Scientists Awarded $50,000
Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine, Georgia Institute of Technology and Mercer University's College of Pharmacy in Atlanta; Memorial University Medical Center University and Mercer University in Savannah; and University of Georgia in Athens divided the $400,000 Cancer Research Awards funded through Georgia's State Income Tax Check-Off program. Reviewers select scientifically sound, yet creative ideas that may advance progress toward detecting, treating or curing cancers of the breast, prostate and ovary. Priority is given to investigators who require seed funding to achieve proof-of-principle leading to national peer-reviewed funding. For details: www.georgiacancer.org/res-cancerawardees0809.php.

Distinguished Scholars Win Grants
- Susanna Fletcher Greer, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology at Georgia State University, is the only scientist in Georgia to be selected by the American Cancer Society for a four year ACS Scholar Grant. Profile
- Ruben Rene Gonzalez-Perez, PhD, Assistant Professor in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Immunology at Morehouse School of Medicine has been awarded a $1 million NIH/NCI grant to continue work on strategies targetting postmenopausal and obese women. Profile
- E. Shyam P. Reddy, PhD, Professor and Co-Director, Cancer Biology, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gyneology at the Georgia Center for Excellence at Grady Health System, has received a $525,000 DOD grant to continue work on prostate cancer. Profile
- Dominique Broccoli, PhD, who leads the cancer biology and genetics program at the William and Iffath Hoskins Center for Biomedical Research at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, and is Professor at Mercer University, has received a one-year $50,000 grant from the The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative to fund sarcoma cancer research.
