1. Smile and Say Hello to Me
This sounds like a "no-brainer," but smiling and saying hello to children and youth on the streets and in the halls is a great way help youth feel important. This simple step is especially powerful with teenagers who sometimes feel like outsiders between the worlds of childhood and adulthood.
2. Get to Know My Name
Get to know the names of the youth in your block, your building, and your faith community. Greet youth by name, so they know there is one more adult in their life who cares about them. You never know the impact you may have.
3. Ask Me What I Think & How I Feel
Another very simple step: ask questions and listen. Listen to your children, listen to your students, listen to children and youth. Learn about their world. Don't respond with advice. There are times to give advice and times to listen to show you care about what youth think and feel. Take time to learn about the world from the perspective of youth.

Just imagine being young, going through the day -- from breakfast, to school, to after school program, back to your neighborhood and home -- with all the adults you meet along the way smiling, engaging and encouraging you in big and little ways. What could you achieve?

5. Celebrate Youth Arts
Citywide Youth Coalition is organizing a youth arts celebration at the New Haven City Hall on Tuesday, December 7th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. We will send a more detailed invitation for this "open house" style event. At 5:30 p.m., we will hold a brief business meeting and honor great youth work in our community. We hope to see you there!
