Member Highlight: Teen to Teen Helpline

Teen to Teen Helpline
203-789-TEEN, part of United Teen Connection, Inc., is a simple
program of educating teens to help themselves and others before a crisis develops.
Teen to Teen
helps everyone who calls. Our
teens are positive role models and know if they and others made it thru a
crisis others with have a good chance also. We provide options not
answers.
Success Story: One of the teens came into the office for his shift,
it was clear he had something on his mind. I waited for him to take a deep breath
and then he started to talk. He did not talk about himself, but
a new student he had bumped into in the hallway and had been observing for a
few days. He sensed this shy girl with an aura of intense
sadness. As we talked he asked me what he should do. Instead, I
asked him what he thought he should do and we laughed. He decided to provide
this shy girl with knowledge that she was not alone and had
a friend who cares and would provide her with a listening ear if she
should want to share. He gave her literature on eating disorders
and a phone number or two if she should choose to use them.
He also urged her to talk to a trusted adult, such as the school nurse or
someone she truly trusted.

Resource Highlight: Youth Map
|
YOUTH MAP is an information management system which will assess all
youth-related programs in New Haven. It is designed to improve the
performance, visibility, and monitoring of youth organizations.
With many parents struggling to balance work and family life in New
Haven, this tool can provide a valuable community resource. It will allow city government to directly assist families by providing online access to New Haven's wealth of community services. The Youth Map site will provide the public with a direct connection to youth organizations and their community offerings. The Youth Map will serve as an online bulletin board for youth activities, ranging from summer camps to health services. In many cases, community members will be able to find out about organizations that previously they did not know existed. It will also provide the public with the ability to interact directly with youth organizations in an online community. Parents will be able to access up-to-date information on programs, internship openings, public
services, and other community opportunities for New Haven's youth.

The date and location will be announced as soon as its firm. We are recruiting organizations to host resource tables and we are planning workshops to help staff, volunteers and leadership organize their work. Please reply to this email, if you would like to help with planning, host a resource table or let us know of your program's training needs.
