Greetings!

Thank you for your continued interest and support in building our Great Start System in Oakland County.  The purpose of the GSC-O is to assure a coordinated system of community resources and support whereby ALL Oakland County families have knowledge of and access to the services they need which will result in their children being prepared and eager to learn.

Office of Great Start

The newly created Office of Great Start is designed to coordinate 84 separate funding sources for early childhood programs that currently are spread across various state agencies.  It sits within the Department of Education.
Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge
  • Michigan has completed and submitted its application for $70 million in early childhood funds through the federal Race to the Top - Early Learning Challenge.
  • The federal challenge will funnel a total of $500 million to states. Reviewers have begun their process. Winning states will be notified on or before Dec. 31.
  • In total, 35 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rica submitted applications.  It is speculated that 7 grants are likely to be awarded.
  • Michigan's application was put together by a team of early education experts.
  • Key areas that Michigan focused on include:
    • Developing and adopting a common, statewide Tiered Quality Rating and Improvement System (TQRIS)
    • Developing and using statewide high-quality early learning and development standards
    • Identifying and addressing the health, behavioral and developmental needs of children with high needs to improve school readiness
    • Developing an workforce knowledge and competency framework and a progression of credentials within the field of early childhood, starting with an Infant/Toddler Credential.
    • Understanding the status of children's learning and development at Kindergarten entry
    • Building an early learning data system to improve instruction, practices, services and policies
  • To view the Michigan application, click here. To view the Appendix, click here.
  • This year's Michigan Early Childhood CHALLENGE will be jointly hosted as a conference call or webinar by the Michigan Department of Education and the Early Childhood Investment Corporation.
  • It will commence on December 1 from 10-11:30 wherein the RTT team will walk participants through the Early Learning Challenge application and its implications for young children in Michigan.
  • The CHALLENGE will end with a second conference call within 24 hours of the federal announcement of grant awards.  Regardless the outcome, we will use this opportunity to talk about where we go from here.
  • More information will be provided as we know more.

Fall 2011 Children's Champion

Great Start Collaborative-Oakland would like to recognize Paul Potts and Ayana Knox-Potts as our Fall Children's Champions. Paul and Ayana are the proud parents of 6 children that range in age from 7 months old to 8 yrs. old. Three children are biological, and three have been fostered, adopted and welcomed into their home with open arms! Ayana & Paul are model parents who advocate tirelessly--not only on the behalf of their own children, but for children across Michigan. During the past election year, both Paul and Ayana were active in meeting with candidates in their local area. They also attended Star Power events and met face-to-face with state legislators to discuss their experiences as parents, and skillfully added to their discussion the challenges that foster and adoptive parents face when advocating for their children. For our monthly Parent Coalition meetings, Paul shows up alongside Ayana (often with a baby in tow), and effectively contributes a father's prospective, concerns, and solutions to our discussions. In addition to attending and contributing to PC meetings as a Parent Representative, you will also see Ayana at subcommittee meetings and Strategic Leadership meetings. Paul and Ayana are outstanding leaders! You will often see them on the front lines of every project-- leading, directing and making new parents or partners feel comfortable and welcomed. She is also a contact for the local library in Rochester providing Great Start Materials for parents to access services. Thank you Paul and Ayana for all you do.
