Recent Data Shows Significant Reductions for Infant Mortality in Oakland County!

The most recent (2008) infant mortality data for Oakland County as a whole as well as select cities such as Southfield, Pontiac show some really positive outcomes!

In Oakland County, the infant mortality rate dropped to 6.4.  However, an even more significant drop was seen specifically in the black population where the infant mortality rate was reduced from 20.9 in 2007 to 10.6 in 2008!

For Southfield, the infant mortality rate dropped from 20.4 in 2007 to negligible in 2008!  Specifically in the black population, the infant mortality rate was reduced from 23.3 in 2007 to negligible in 2008!

For Pontiac, the infant mortality rate dropped from 13.2 in 2007 to 12.2 in 2008.  However, an even more significant drop was seen specifically in the black population where the infant mortality rate was reduced from 23.0 in 2007 to 14.5 in 2008.

These reductions in infant mortality are the most significant we have ever experienced.  Congratulations to everyone in our community for the successful efforts in reducing infant mortality in Oakland County!

Greetings!

Thank you for your continued interest and support in building our Great Start System in Oakland County.  The purpose of the GSC-O is to assure a coordinated system of community resources and support whereby ALL Oakland County families have knowledge of and access to the services they need which will result in their children being prepared and eager to learn.
Issues that Relate to Infant Mortality
Oakland County's overall infant mortality rate continues to be lower than statewide averages.  In addition recent data shows significant reductions.  However, there are still reasons for concern.  The Fetal Infant Mortality Review Team (FIMR) has identified five major areas that likely contribute to infant mortality cases in Oakland County.  These include prematurity, nutrition, infection, smoking and unsafe sleep.

The likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and baby increases through education and access to health services before, during and after pregnancy.

Visit the Oakland County Health Department for more information.
