FACS Division Newsletter

Fall is here! Full of much activity and preparation for this year's ACTE Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Dec. 2-4. I hope you are making plans to join us for this year's Convention. It promises to hold great sessions, another book signing with Chef Jeff, great speakers, awards, a Family and Consumer Sciences Division luncheon, committee work, scholarship fundraisers, a first-time attendee reception in our FACS Information Center, Showcase for Best Practices, and much more. Our first ever Day of Service, in coordination with Habitat for Humanity, concludes the Convention on Saturday. Make sure you register if you'd like to join me in taking part in this rewarding activity.

Sections of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Division:

  • NATFACS -- National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences
  • NATEFACS -- National Association Teacher Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences
  • NASAFACS -- National Association State Administrators of Family and Consumer Science

Reminders for Family and Consumer Sciences Division Members:

  • Make certain that you keep your ACTE membership current. Now is the time to make sure that we unite in taking a stand for the programs in which we have invested our lives. We are in challenging times and continue to need strength with all of us involved.
  • For information about the NATFACS Showcase of Best Practices, please contact Stacy Skaggs to sign up.
  • We need your help in nominating professionals who are worthy of receiving FACS Division Awards and get those to Lindsey Shirley by the October 31 deadline. The application is available for download by clicking here.
    • FACS Division Graduate Fellowship Applications should be received by Lela Goar no later than November 8. The application is available for download by clicking here.
  • We always need contributions to the "Nook" for NATFACS scholarships for new Family and Consumer Sciences teachers. You may contact Debby Ashburn for how you can help!
  • Your committee involvement in ACTE committees, FACS Division committees and NATFACS, NASAFACS and NATEFACS committees are always welcome! Please make sure that you sign an involvement form at Convention in the Information Center, Room N263.
  • We are also looking for representation in the Family and Consumer Sciences Coalition. For anyone interested, please contact me by e-mail.
  • Remember that ACTE elections this year have been moved up to December 3 through January 1, 2011. It will be a completely electronic election, and, to vote, you must be a member by November 4, 2010. You may also vote on site at the Convention.
  • Don't forget to vote for the Pepsi Refresh Grant twice daily through October 31. ACTE has a chance at $250,000 to help improve the image of CTE!

I have had a great beginning serving you as your ACTE VP for FACS this quarter by:

  • attending an orientation to the ACTE Board of Directors and Board meeting in July
  • participating with AAFCS on the Essential Toolkit and the FCS Brand
  • planning details for our ACTE Convention with room and meal arrangements, speakers, concurrent sessions, appointing committee members and working with the presidents of NATFACS, NASAFACS and NATEFACS to make sure all plans were in place for you in Las Vegas
  • reviewing budgetary responsibilities
  • sending e-blasts to members
  • reviewing legislation and publications and how they impact us
  • corresponding with Board members for issues that affect us

I will be participating in an FCCLA New Board of Directors Webinar and attending an Army Leadership Conference in Kansas within the next week. I seek to serve you and be your voice as we continually evolve to serve the students and communities in which we live.

Please share our work and the importance of ACTE membership with Family and Consumer Sciences professionals in your area. We continually find new avenues by which we are making a difference in students' lives. Please take the opportunity to share your successes, too, with those around you so our image can be seen both locally and nationally. I would welcome any success stories you have to share so I can use them to impact our voice in Washington with those who speak to our legislators from ACTE, and have more depth in what I believe is important for all of us.

I look forward to seeing all of you in December in Las Vegas!

Respectfully Yours,
