 Taggart is Discussion State Champion--

First Ever for MWHS Speech

Speech State ChampionMWHS senior Ella Taggart was named the Discussion State Champion at the AA State Speech competition in Chanhassen April 21. She is the first ever State Champion for the MWHS Speech Team. Teammate Zack McDowell, a junior, also did well earning a sixth-place finish in Extemporaneous Reading.

 

This was Ella's second state appearance, after placing fifth in Discussion last year. According to Coach Anitra Trapp, Ella has worked hard in Discussion for her entire five-year career at MWHS.

NHS Welcomes New Inductees--

NHS Officers 

A total of 44 MWHS students were inducted into the National Honor Society at a special ceremony April 22. Another 38 seniors, who were inducted into the program last year, were also on hand for special recognition.

 

The inductees recited the New Member Pledge, which encourages high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The officers of the NHS Executive Board spoke to each of those standards.

Pair of Vocalists Selected for Honor Choirs-- 

MWHS Students Kelly & Smith Make the Cut

Honor Choir CandidatesMWHS musicians Shelby Smith and Hogan Kelly have been selected for the ACDA-MN State Honor Choirs for their respective grades. Members of the choirs, who are chosen by recorded audition, come from all over the State of Minnesota.

MWHS Jazz Band is Superior-- 

All Three Contest Judges Agree

Archery Elementary State Champs 

All three Minnesota State High School League judges agreed that the MWHS Jazz Band earned a superior rating at the Region 2AA Jazz Contest, held April 23 at Shakopee High School. Pieces performed were "Run with It" (swing, blues song), "The Shadow of Your Smile" (ballad), and "Land of Make Believe" (upbeat Latin tune).

 

The MWHS Jazz Band was also invited to perform a pre-concert at the Hopkins High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 21, where they played to a larger-than-expected audience of both Westonka supporters and jazz enthusiasts from the greater Twin Cities area. The students were then treated to complimentary tickets to the fabulous main event.

"Midnight In Paris"
 

ParisPack your bags, grab your passport, and be whisked away for an unforgettable night in Paris. Come join us while we celebrate this year's "Midnight in Paris" themed Prom.

 

Prom will be held this year on Saturday, May 5 with festivities beginning at 5:00. Everyone is invited to attend the Prom Grand March and coronation ceremony where the first ever prom king and queen will be crowned.

Bridge Generation Gap

GMS Gillespie Center ProjectGMS teacher Leigh Ann Kaminski wanted to offer a morning enrichment class that would provide a service project for the community.

 

"I know kids love to do crafts," she said. After talking to Gillespie Center Director Mindy Anderson, Kaminski combined craft-making and service to the community by offering a class where students would create centerpieces and placemats for the dining room at the Gillespie Center.

Hilltop Book Fair Luau

HT Book FairHilltop is having a spring Book Fair Luau April 30-May 4. Family Fun Night is Thursday, May 3 from 5-8 p.m. Wear your favorite Hawaiian gear, come for spaghetti ($5 adults, $3 children) and browse the books.  

 

 

All proceeds go to purchase books for the Hilltop Media Center.

GMS Art Gala--

Features "Art in Oz"

GMS Art GalaThe annual Grandview Middle School Art Gala will be held Thursday, May 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme of this year's event is "Art in Oz." This event is a great opportunity for students to show off some wonderful works of art as well as their musical and dramatic talents. Art teacher, Pam Veilleux, stated that the show will include actors portraying the Oz characters, both vocal and instrumental music, and a fabulous visual arts presentation.

Shirley Hills Carnival--

Features Huge Silent Auction

The Shirley Hills Spring Carnival is just around the corner! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a day full of fun and excitement. The carnival is the school's largest fundraiser.

 

This fun-filled family event includes carnival games, an exceptional silent auction and of course, food!
