 Westonka Receives STEM Grant--

Implements Nation's Leading Curriculum at MWHS

Speech State Champion

MWHS is the recipient of a $35,000 grant from Project Lead The Way (PLTW), the nation's leading provider of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. Funds from the grant will support the implementation of the PLTW engineering curriculum, including the purchase of materials and equipment that will be used in the hands-on, project-based classes that are a distinguishing characteristic of PLTW's curriculum.

Stock Market Masters--  

MWHS Seniors Take 5th out of 33 Schools  

NHS Officers 

Four classes of MWHS seniors recently completed the spring version of the Stock Market Game with great results. As a school, MWHS finished in 5th place out of 33 schools that entered five teams or more in the game. On top of that two MWHS teams of seniors finished in the top 10 teams of the 431 teams entered in the region.

 

The team of Lexi Christopulos, Morton Greenslit, John Hunt, Jakob Cook, and Allie Gruman finished in 4th place out of 431.

Honor Choir Candidates

MWHS students had a lot to celebrate at the quarterly recognition assembly April 26. The assembly opened with performances by the award-winning Jazz Band and Madd Jazz.

 

Recognition was given to students in the following categories: 4.0 GPAs, 'A' honor roll, most improved GPAs, perfect attendance and the White Hawks Award (recognizing character, citizenship, improvement, kindness and/or school spirit).

Q3 Distinguished Students--

Honored at MWHS 

Archery Elementary State Champs 

A total of 20 MWHS students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship, and academic achievement for the third quarter of the 2011-2012 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student Breakfasts at the high school April 26 and 27. At the end of each quarter teachers are asked to name a distinguished student in each broad subject area for each grade level.

Get High Marks at Festival

Paris

On April 21, Westonka middle school band members participated in the West Metro Solo and Ensemble Festival at Wayzata Central Middle School. The Festival included 5th-8th graders from Maple Grove, Plymouth, Wayzata, and Westonka. 

A total of 39 Westonka students prepared 25 solos, duets, and small ensembles and performed for an adjudicator who provided positive and constructive feedback and awarded a rating. The Westonka students earned 14 Superiors and 11 Excellents--the two highest ratings.

Coffee House Jazz-- 

Madd Jazz & Jazz Band Team Up for a Great Night 

 Archery Elementary State ChampsThe high school's two award-winning jazz groups, Madd Jazz and the Jazz Band, will combine to entertain at "Coffee House Jazz" Fri. and Sat., May 11 and 12 at 7:30 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mound. Both groups will perform separately and present one joint number. Madd Jazz selections will include classic jazz tunes and jazz arrangements of the Beatles and other contemporary music. The Jazz Band is performing some jazz classics, as well as "Linus and Lucy" (from the Peanuts cartoon) and "What'd I Say" (a Ray Charles' rock tune). The performance will end with a joint performance of the jazz standard "Straighten Up and Fly Right."

Tickets: $10 adults/$5 students & seniors

Is a Huge Success!

GMS Gillespie Center Project

The TEAM Shirley Hills Carnival was a huge success. The weather was just what organizers ordered to bring the crowds in, wet and cold. The Shirley Hills parents put in countless hours to make this carnival bigger than ever. The fun-filled family event featured a variety of carnival games, food, and an exceptional silent auction.
