Westonka's Wharram Signs to Run Division 1--
Cross Country & Track at UND

MWHS senior Parker Wharram has distinguished himself as a runner during his high school years. He will soon be running year 'round for the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, a Division I school. Wharram signed a letter of intent Feb. 15 to attend the University and participate in fall Cross Country, winter Indoor Track and spring Track. His chosen field of study is aviation.

GMS Students Solve Future Problems--  

Win 3 out of 6 Regional Awards  

Grandview Middle School students fared well at the regional Future Problem Solving competition, held Feb. 4 in Richfield. Six junior awards were given and GMS received three of them. Those team members were: Diana Hoernemann, Lauren Sherman, Reed Kohls and Jack LaTour; Mackenzie Anderson, Abby Wharram, Samantha Eidsness, and Sarah Liedman; and Julia Peterson, Audrey Woychick, Megan Heins, and Calli Battis.

Shirley Hills Annual Event-- 
Sparks Students' Imaginations

Budding scientists, artists, writers, and researchers took center stage at the 18th Annual Shirley Hills Imagination Fair last week. Over 90 projects were submitted by students from kindergarten through fourth grades. Students who participated in the Imagination Fair got to choose which category they wanted to participate in-writing and literature, music and art, life science, technology, history and social studies, earth science, kits and collections, and imagination projects-based on their individual interests, according to project chairperson Sara Russick.

 

"I've been involved in this amazing event for several years, and this year the students really raised the bar!" said Russick.

Mark SnoDaze Dodgeball Tourney

 

The eighth-annual White Hawks Dodgeball Tournament and Charity Food Drive collected over $1,500 and hundreds of pounds of food for local needy families. Team America, comprised of Cole Easley, Connor Murphy, Connor Sir, Adam Kunz, Charlie Curti and Grant Nagel, won the tournament.

Show Stopping Pop Singers--
Take Stage with UW Singers

 

The MWHS Pop Singers will perform at the Watertown-Mayer Performing Arts Center, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. along with the UW Madison Wisconsin Singers. The Pop Singers will perform the first set of show-stopping selections from their 2011-12 40th-Season and then the Wisconsin Singers will take the stage with "Starstruck", their tribute to legendary stars of the silver screen.

Junior Hawkettes Dance Camp-- 

& Hawkettes Dance Spectacular  

 

The 11th-annual Junior Hawkettes Dance Camp will be held Feb. 27- March 1, in the MWHS cafeteria. Girls in grades K-7 are invited to take part in the camp, where they will learn basic dance technique and a dance routine from the MWHS Hawkettes Dance Team members. Typically 80-100 young dancers from the Westonka Community take part in this annual event.

MWHS Phy Ed Teacher & Head Basketball Coach--
Rick Dahl is January Feature Teacher

Rick Dahl is the January Lord Fletcher's Feature Teacher. Dahl has spent his entire 28-year teaching and coaching career in the Westonka Schools. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a degree in K-12 Physical Education/Health and followed that with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from St. Thomas University.

 

"Mr. Dahl has been a tremendous gift to the Westonka Public School District. Since he is an experienced veteran teacher, Mr. Dahl has seen educational changes over time and has adapted to them," said Assistant Principal Marty Fischer. "Through many years of coaching and teaching, Rick has walked the talk, which has earned him a high level of respect from his peers across the district."

Back-to-Back Conference Champs-- 
Boys Swim & Dive Repeats Winning Ways
   

Complementing an undefeated season in the Wright County Conference, Boys Swim & Dive defended its conference title from last year in Hutchinson on Saturday. Scoring 434.5 points-leading the Watertown-Mayer Waconia Delano Holy Family team total of 352, Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield's 271.5 and Hutchinson's 266.

Alpine Ski Closes-Out Season--
Charlie Mass Takes 37th at Sections

 

At the Section 5 State Qualification race at Afton Alps last Thurs., senior Captain Charlie Maahs closed out his career with a solid run putting him in 37th out of 100.

Girls Basketball Wins Over Lester Prairie--
Noelle Wait Gets Double-Double   


Girls Basketball pulled away in the second half to secure a win over the Lester Prairie Bulldogs, 61-42, on Mon, Feb 6 at MWHS. The win put an end to the White Hawks four-game losing streak.

Nordic Ski Sends Harrison to State--
1 of 15 not from EP or Minnetonka

 

MWHS Nordic Ski concluded Section 2 competition at Theodore Wirth Park on February 9 by sending sophomore Scott Harrison to compete at the state level. Harrison's 10 kilometer pursuit time of 28:20 earned a 6th place finish among 73 skiers.
