Westonka Summer Institute--
Peru Students Get Broader Look at the World

Q1 Celebration A Honor Roll

Last summer, eleven Westonka students as part of the Westonka Summer Institute (WSI) had an opportunity to visit Peru to study archeology and the history of the world's earliest civilizations. The group climbed Machu Picchu, attended the winter solstice festival, went on an archeological dig, and toured the underground world of the Incas. This was no vacation. This unique summer school came with months of planning, meetings, and course work designed to enhance their immersion experience.

It's a Chick Thing--

Westonka Musicians are BrassChix

Most everyone has heard of the Dixie Chicks, but what about the BrassChix? A trio of brass instrumentalists from the MWHS Band attended a special event in January hosted by the Music Department at the University of St. Thomas. Kristen Holmberg, Christine Osmek and Hanna Brustad attended BrassChix, an annual gathering dedicated to female brass players.

"Brass instrument-playing females are often out-numbered by males, so this is a whole day dedicated just to them," said MWHS Band Director Gretchen Chilson.

Hilltop Second-Graders Asked--

How Many Rubik's Cubes Make Up Abe Lincoln?

How many Rubik's Cubes does it take to make Abe Lincoln? Hilltop Primary School second-graders found out it takes a total of 225. Teacher Mara Drill said Hilltop had ordered Rubik's Cubes for everyone in second grade to use in math. "When we ordered the cubes, there was a program where the company loaned out cubes for us to make a mosaic of one of six different famous people," said Drill. "We chose Abe Lincoln because most kids know who he is and President's Day is coming."
