Westonka's Volleyball Powerhouses--    

The Mack Sisters Commit to Division I School

Volleyball Mack TwinsThe MWHS volleyball team is on a roll this year thanks in part to junior twin sisters Brenna and Callie Mack. After being heavily recruited, both girls recently made commitments to attend the University of Akron, Ohio after graduation.


The White Hawks opened section play Oct. 27 against Norwood Young America with their best season record ever of 20-7-1.

Trees Make Outdoor Classrooms Cool---    

Hilltop Kicks Off Tree Trust Grant   

HT Tree Trust Planting Day 

Kim Insley of KARE 11 TV came out to shoot a "What's Cool in Your School" segment of Hilltop's tree planting project on October 17 for the station's morning show. Students, staff, and volunteers spent the day planting trees and installing benches. Superintendent Kevin Borg and Assistant Superintendent Mark Femrite ceremoniously cut a red ribbon to open the new outdoor classroom at Hilltop Primary School.

 

The segment is scheduled to air Nov. 3 at 6:15 AM and possibly again that afternoon at 4 PM. After it airs, it will also be available on the station's website.

Westonka Grad Sara Strother----    

To Address Art Educators of Minnesota Conference

Art: Strother and Hensley2010 grad Sara Strother, an Art Education major at UMD, will speak at the 2011 Art Educators of Minnesota conference on Nov. 4-5 on the influence of folk art in today's art education in Estonia. 

 

Strother spent her last term studying abroad in Sweden, Estonia and Finland, where the students studied the cross-cultural comparisons in art education. Strother focused on Estonian folk art and the folk costume.

Westonka Opens Its Arms-- 

To Exchange Students from Around the Globe

FES 2011-2012 

The Westonka community has opened its arms to 10 students from around the world for the 2011-12 school year. Eight of the exchange students came to Westonka through the Youth for Understanding (YFU) program while two are sponsored by the Mound Westonka Rotary.

Hilltop Octoberfest Success!--

Raises over $24,000

HT Face PaintingSeveral hundred students, parents, and community members attended the annual Octoberfest carnival at Hilltop Primary School Oct. 15. Proceeds from the carnival, which totaled over $24,000, will provide funds for a variety of activities for the school throughout the year, including Adventures in Art, scholarships, The Operetta, Specialist in Residence and more.

The League of Women Voters sponsored a candidates' forum for the Westonka School Board Candidates Tuesday, Oct. 11. The forum was recorded by the Lake Minnetonka Cable Commission (LMCC) and will air several more times on Local Cable Channel 21 including Oct. 31 and Nov. 3, both at 7 PM.  

 

The video of the candidate forum can also be viewed at any time on the LMCC website.

On Nov 8, Westonka residents will be asked to vote on three ballot questions to provide additional education funding from local property taxes for Westonka Schools:

           

Question 1:  

A no-tax-increase renewal of an existing operating levy

Question 2:  

A 15-year bond to fund deferred maintenance of district buildings
Question 3:  

A 15-year bond to fund improvements to the learning environment

Loses Conference Crown to Rival   


Hoping to defend their conference crown in a close match, the injury-plagued Varsity Boys Team ended the 5K in second place with a score of 55 to Orono's 41.
