Morsels From the Editor
Welcome to all of our new subscribers. Hope you enjoy these morsels about prayer and the spiritual life. Last issue I asked for more contributions to the Gratitude Journal and a few of you answered me right away! I was happy to see your "attitude of gratitude!" See the Gratitude Journal below. Did you hear my witness talk at Magnificat? I have it on CD now and also right here if you wish to listen to it. This issue is about sheep and the Good Shepherd. Hope you enjoy.
Any comments or suggestions, be sure to write a Letter to the Editor. |

Prayerful Quote
Prayer is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself.

Personal Pondering
by Colleen Spiro
The
Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul. (Psalm 23:1-3)
I
was so tried and stressed. I needed some time off so I took a week off from
work. In the middle of that week, for 3 days, my hubby and I went to a beach a
couple of hours from our home. We found a hotel right on the beach and rarely
left it.
We
spent each day either on the beach or in our room
or sitting on our balcony staring at the water. When we were hungry, we ate. When we were thirsty,
we drank. When we were tired, we napped. When the sun set, we watched.
I
finished one book and started another one. I prayed and read scripture. I
listened to some spiritual reflections on my ipod.
On
the last night, I was sitting on the balcony, listening to a reflection about
prayer. I was looking at the beach and watching the sky change colors after
the sun had set. The speaker was talking about praying with scripture. He
mentioned Psalm 23 and I dug out my prayer card that I had just stuck into my
purse before leaving home. It was Psalm 23. So I read it. And then I prayed it.
The
Lord is indeed my shepherd. And this week He has led me beside restful waters. And, without a doubt, He
has refreshed my soul. Right then I knew I had found a mantra to pray with
for a few days or however long I needed it: "He refreshes my soul." Thank you,
Lord.

Shepherds
by Colleen SpiroOn one particular retreat I was on many years ago, I was feeling drawn to the Good Shepherd and Psalm 23. After I went home, my spiritual director for that week sent me an article on the Holy Land Shepherds. I was blown away by the story of how the shepherds will recite Psalm 23 each day and how many of the lines of the Psalm are actual duties of the Holy Land Shepherds. I would like to share some of it with you. He leads me beside still waters. Sheep will not drink from fast flowing streams or any water that is gurgling. So the shepherds, if they can't find a pool of calm water, will cup their hands together so each sheep can drink. He restores my strength. In the Holy Land each sheep keeps his place in line all day. But each sheep takes his turn to go to the shepherd who rubs the sheep's face and ears and basically shows the sheep his affection. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. At night the shepherd dips his hand into olive oil to help heal any injuries the sheep may have. Then the shepherd fills a large cup with water (overflowing.) The sheep will sink its nose into the water, right up to its eyes, and drink until refreshed. Not surprising, after reading this, that Jesus chose to tell us he was the Good Shepherd. He knew the people would understand. The Good Shepherd cares for us with compassion and tenderness. He heals our wounds, quenches our thirst, and pours love into our hearts. And our cups overflow. A Gratitude Journal
by Colleen Spiro
"If the only prayer you ever say in your life is thank you, it will be enough." Meister Eckhart
Dear Colleen, I am so grateful for all the things and opportunities that
God has done for me. Of all of these I think my voice in Song and Chant stands
out the most. When I Cantor, it is not really me for I think my voice is
awful. It must be God's Grace working through me as others
sing too. Whatever others hear, is not my own. Music is an awesome Ministry and a huge responsibility but
also a Holy Grace. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve. - Cindy
Glorioso
I am grateful for my family,
I am grateful for my friends, I am grateful for my Pastor and his wife, Fay, I
am so lucky to be living in this world even though there are so many things
going wrong in it. We have to have faith and pray everyday to God to help us
understand things we don't understand. - Carol Wentworth, Colleen's Mum
Colleen, my cup overflows
with gratitude to my Lord for the presentation of a great-grandson, beautiful
in body, beautiful in personality at 4 months. How can I describe the heartfelt
gratitude I feel when I have him in my arms and his little eyes find mine and
I FIND JESUS in his beautiful eyes. When I feel his little heart
beating and know that Jesus is there in my arms, the beauty, the love and the
gratitude is beyond measure. I am so overcome with love for
this child - what a gift - what a love shown to me - what beauty is
offered to me in this small body. He is to be christened this
Sunday. Pray for him - Julian Joseph
Teti. - Jeanne McGirrWhat are you grateful for today??? Is there something that you would like to thank God for and would like to share? Write to the Editor and put in the subject line - Gratitude. | |
