In the Prayer Byte article below this one, I shared a poem which is very meaningful to me. I often think I have to DO something to find God. I have to Do my devotions and Do my prayers for the day and Do my spiritual reading and Do my ministry.
All of those things are good and important, please do not misunderstand me. But, in order to find God, we really do not need to Do anything. We do not need to accomplish anything. We just need to Be.
We don't make spiritual life happen, it is already happening. God is working in our lives right now. The spiritual journey is about experiencing what is already happening, rather than trying to make it happen.
Thomas Merton - "We have what we seek, it is there all the time, and if we give it time, it will make itself known to us."
Ahhhh. If we give it time. That is the key, of course.
When Lent began, I was whining about not getting enough silent time with the Lord. I corrected that during Lent. I spent at least an hour in silence with God almost (I have to be honest) every day. Did it make a difference?
Yes, most certainly. I am less scattered. I am more centered. I feel like I am back in touch with God more. I feel like I am doing what the Rule of St. Benedict says - Keep the reverence of God always before our eyes.
Well, not always. But I am praying for that grace. I am staying in touch with God better than before. I am at peace about that.
How about you? How did your Lent work out?
