Prayerful Quote We must lay before Him what is in us, not what ought to be in us. - C. S. Lewis, Letters to Malcolm
Personal Pondering by Colleen Spiro
Love takes up where knowledge leaves off. - St. Thomas Aquinas
A priest once told me that one of the most difficult journeys for people to make in the spiritual life is the journey from the head to the heart. I remember when I first converted to the Catholic Church. I was so hungry for knowledge of my new faith. I repeated another year of RCIA because I wanted to be sure I hadn't missed anything the first time. And then I took a correspondence course in Catholicism to learn even more. It was like I was starving. I couldn't get enough knowledge. That hunger was important because it helped me to learn and know my faith. And it still is important. We can never know it all. And how can we defend our faith and explain our beliefs if we do not understand them?
But there is a difference between knowing about God and knowing God. We can know someone's birthday, for example, but do we know their heart's desire? One can get stuck in the head knowledge and fail to make that connection to the heart. For some of us it really is a long and difficult journey. Especially for people like me who tend to fear intimacy. However, these days I really do yearn more for the intimate relationship with God, the heart knowledge. I yearn to know God's heart. |
Prayer Bytes
One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received about prayer was this quote from a Benedictine monk, Dom John Chapman - "Pray as you can. Don't pray as you can't." We so often try to pray the way we think we are supposed to pray or the way we have always prayed, rather than the way we are being led. But our prayer life changes. We need to pray today's prayer, not yesterday's. For the longest time, I prayed in a certain set way. I would pray rote prayers like the rosary and read a daily meditation. Then suddenly, it all seemed so dry to me. I felt like I was just reading words and not really entering into the prayer.
It was my spiritual director who pointed out to me that I was being called to a new way of prayer. So many signs were pointing me to centering prayer. I had chosen to ignore those signs, and I had tried to pray the "way that I can't."
What we forget is that prayer is God's work. God will lead us to pray the way He wants us to pray. We need to pay attention to the Spirit within and try to remember to pray as we can.

A Gratitude Journal
I wish to thank God for my family plus my church family. He has been with me during some hard times even though I feel he has forgotten me at certain times. Times that really get me down, sickness among the church family and mainly in my own family. I wish I could take the pain away from the dear children and my friends. I can only pray for them everyday and night. Thank you God. - Carol Wentworth
What are you grateful for today??? Is there something that you would like to thank God for and would like to share? Write to the Editor and put in the subject line - Gratitude.
