Congratulations to Sharon Egretta Sutton FAIA National 2011 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award Recipient The national American Institute of Architect's Board of Directors bestowed the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award on architect and University of Washington professor Dr. Sharon Egretta Sutton FAIA, for her efforts to increase minority participation in the design professions and her advocacy on behalf of environmental and social justice. Established in 1972, the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award has honored architects and organizations that exemplify the profession's proactive social mandate, ranging from issues such as affordable housing, minority inclusiveness, and access for persons with disabilities. "Through both action and words, Dr. Sutton has inspired a generation of young people from a wide range of backgrounds to use their skills in service to their community through design," said Lisa Richmond, Executive Director of AIA Seattle. "We in Seattle have been fortunate to enjoy the benefits of Dr. Sutton's advocacy and leadership, and are so pleased that through this award that leadership will be shared across the country."
