Highlight of the Week
 
Looking to get involved?  Four AIA Seattle Committees are actively seeking additional members.
 
The Design for Aging committee fosters design innovation and disseminates knowledge necessary to enhance the built environment and quality of life for an aging society.  Contact Mark Smedley, NCARB, LEED AP.
 
To promote design excellence among members of the AIA, and foster a collaborative spirit between architects and the broader design community, the Design Committee promotes a range of activities, including design salons, exhibits, and lectures.  Contact Jim Moore AIA or Daniel Toole Assoc. AIA.
 
The Open House committee solicits and reviews applications of architect-designed homes for regular feature publication in Northwest Home/Seattle Magazine, with an open house held on a Sunday afternoon during the month of publication.  Contact Scott Becker.
 
To bring forward critical issues facing Puget Sound neighborhoods and cities, in order to inform, engage, and support advocacy by AIA Seattle Members and others who share concern for the quality of the built environment, join the Urban Design Committee.  Contact Rick Browning AIA

Member News
 
Tim Crowther Assoc. AIA, a designer with Weinstein A|U, is taking part in the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer to support breast cancer research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Support his climb here 
 
Roger H. Newell AIA, principal of Roger H. Newell AIA Architects has been awarded Emeritus status by the American Institute of Architects.  The firm has been a member firm since 1970.
 
Interface Engineering and other members of The Water Team - Central City Concern, SERA Architects, and Gerding Edlen Development - won an award for the Achieving Water Independence in Buildings project from the Sustainable Buildings Industries Council.
 
Two Bassetti principals have recently given presentations abroad. Greg Hepp AIA, LEED AP was a keynote speaker at the Seoul National University of Technology Ninth International Housing Symposium and presenter at the Korean Ministry of Education Sustainable School Symposium.  Lorne McConachie AIA gave multiple presentations in Taiwan at the 2010 Microsoft School of the Future Innovative School Forum.
 
Dennis DePape AIA of DePape Associates Architecture is chair of the Kenmore Downtown Taskforce which will complete its 2 years of planning activities on a Transit Oriented District adjacent to 2 large wetlands in Kenmore by June. 
 
Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA) of Seattle, Wash., is a finalist in the American Council of Engineering Companies' 44th annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition for designing the stormwater management system for Magnuson Park in Seattle.

Thanks to the ARE Prep team of instructors for the five-week session on Structural Systems:  Dave Swanson, Paul Crocker, and Katie Baldwin of Reid Middleton, and Johnny Hong of Integrus.
 
The AIA Seattle Diversity Roundtable and Architects Without Borders are teaming up with the broader design community in an effort to help rebuild Haiti in a way that is helpful, coordinated, culturally responsible and a good match for the skills of our community.  As a result, Architects Without Borders has created a design community-supported fund to solicit donations to help Haiti recover and rebuild.  Click here or here to donate and learn more about the effort.
