       SADD National Conference

Michael Bayler SAB member

Hello newsletter readers! I am a member of the Illinois Student Advisory Board for SADD/IDEA here to talk about SADD National Conference 2011. SADD National Conference was held in beautiful Chicago and I had a ball.

We had some great speakers that channeled our inner leader and also challenged us to think about the problems facing teens our age today. We also had a rocking dance and an awesome trip to Navy Pier that included a boat tour of the city which was a very neat experience.

What I enjoyed the most though, was meeting all sorts of people my age from around the country that shared the idea of preventing destructive decisions. It was very informative to hear of tactics other states had used and activities they participated in. As I looked at all the hundreds of faces at SADD National Conference, I saw the future of prevention and I was very pleased with what I saw. I can't wait for next years conference and I encourage anyone and everyone to try to make it out to SADD National Conference 2012.

IDOT kicks off Operation Teen Safe Driving at the Illinois State Fair

Keeping things safe on the roads can win money for schools with young drivers.  IDOT and the Secretary of State launched the 5th Annual Operation Teen Safe Driving on Monday Aug. 15 at the Illinois State Fair.  They were joined by SADD students and former OTSD participants.

The goal of the program is to reduce teen deaths and injuries on the road. High schools can apply for a $2,000 grant to implement safe driving programs. If your school is chosen, consider using SADD's distracted driving simulator as part of your program.  Applications must be completed by October 1st.  Talk to your SADD Advisor or Driver's Ed teacher today and apply for these funds today.

Reserve the Driving Simulator for your school

The calendar is already filling up with requests for the Distracted Driving Simulator.  We use the latest technology in a safe environment to demonstarte the dangers of distracted driving.  Students take a cyber drive with a virtual passenger on board.  The Simulator offers a choice of touch screen or your own phone for  a realistic look at our brain's inability to focus on more than one thing at a time.

txtng killsContact us now at robyn@ilsadd.org to reserve the Driving Simulator, at no cost, for your school.  This would be a great addtition to your Operation Teen Safe Driving Efforts, so don't wait.  Reserve it today.

Click on the link above to find out how your chapter can partner with local law enforcement and provide a much needed community service. Illinois SADD Student Advisory Board members have participated in the past at the Take Back site held at the Prevention First office in Springfield. Community members are very appreciative of this service and 560 pounds of drugs were collected and disposed of from just that site alone.
The Illinois Drug Education Alliance has developed a prescription drug campaign  which would be a great addtion to this event. The toolkit includes a "pill" stress ball and companion education piece.  Supplies are limited so check it out right away.  For more information on how to use these campaign materials contact randyl.lynn@gmail.com

Trick or Treat in reverse this year....brain

For the third year, Illinois SADD will be partnering with the Illinois Drug Education Alliance this October for their Trick or Treat Brain Campaign. This campaign, targeting parents and other adults in your community, is a great way to inform people about the effect that alcohol has on the teenage brain.

On Halloween night, instead of asking for candy, youth across the state will be handing out stress ball brains along with educational information on the negative effects alcohol has on the teen brain.

There is a reason that the legal drinking age is 21. Alcohol affects a teen brain differently than an adult brain. The human brain isn't fully developed until around age 25. Alcohol can do damage to the parts of a teenagers brain that are not yet fully developed. Let the adults in your community know the science behind underage drinking prevention. Learn about this and IDEA's other campaigns by visiting their website.

Start Planning for Red Ribbon Week

Grab your red nail polish and get ready to paint your school, community, and chapter red!

What started last year as a partnership between IL SADD, Prevention First and the DEA continues to be a popular way to raise awareness about drug prevention.

It is simple, inexpensive and gets noticed.  Students painting the SADD National Conference Red were noticed by NIDA and included in the Sara Bellum blog and got national attention.  Look for more news and ideas on how to Paint Illinonis Red in the next newsletter.

Welcome back!  This ediition of SADDLines is full of information that I  hope you will use in the coming weeks.  In each issue this year I plan to highlight an activity and encourage all chapters to participate and then provide feedback.

For this issue I would like to call attention to Suicide Prevention Week which is the second week of September.  My daughters and I, and many members of our small community lost a very special person this past January. In some small way I hope this honors Ian and all that he meant to so many of us.

During Suicide Prevention week encourage chapter members to write on the inside of their wrists using a ultra fine sharpie or similar ink pen.  They should simply write the words, "prevention" or some may want to write "in remembrance". The intent is to be ready to tell others that it is national suicide prevetion week and there is hope and help available.

This is a simple yet effective way to raise awareness and talk about something that is difficult and painful for some to discuss.

Thanks to Ian's sister, Jen for allowing us to remember Ian in a way that might help others.
