Greetings!

This month our focus is on Generational DifferencesGenerational communication, values, preferences, styles and attitudes are the newest fashion in "Diversity and Inclusion."  This newsletter highlights some of the opportunities organizations can exploit by simply engaging the dynamic energy and innovation made possible by merging generational strengths.  Like no other time in history,  four generations coming together in the marketplace have the potential to make each other better and brighter, and organizations more effective.

Feature Article: The Renaissance of Generations: Opportunity for Breakthrough

Co-authored Diane Brown of TJ Associates, LLC and TTI Performance Systems, LTD.

I'm a Baby Boomer.  When I was growing up, the diversity challenge seemed limited to race, ethnicity and gender.  In fact, I participated in one of the first Fortune 100 health care company strategic diversity and inclusion work teams chartered to improve the experience of diverse talent entering the workforce and serving a diverse marketplace.  We found that bringing in diverse talent was easy.  Deploying and optimizing that talent was not.  People, in general, are uncomfortable with diversity.  We generally aren't great at seeing the world through the eyes of another.  Too often, we want everyone else to communicate, value, think and operate the way we do.

Creating a Gen Y Development Pipeline

by Scott Schimmell

There's no question of what separates dominant organizations in every industry - a unique, competitive advantage in developing and unleashing the potential in their people. Many articles and books are being written these days on the challenges of recruiting, developing, and retaining the best young talent. Gen Y, or Millenials (born 1980-2000), are notorious for being brash, overly curt in communication, die-hard autonomous, unfocused and entitled. Being on the front end of Gen Y, and spending the last decade specializing in leadership development for college students and young professionals, I've seen the worst and I understand our liabilities. However, we're getting a bad rap, and I'd like to take the opportunity to share a few insights into our generation. If you can understand us, learn from us, and develop us, we will transform the potential of your organization and catalyze growth like you've never before imagined.

Practical Applications

At The Talent Journey, we recommend that you bring your teams together to participate in a "Diverse Communications and Problem Solving" workshop. This workshop can be completed in 2 to 4 hours. We consistently get 4.8 out of 5.0 evaluation scores - people of all generations love the workshop!  It teaches people that 95% of the time humans behave consistently. How other's treat us isn't personal - it is WHO THEY ARE. Our job is to learn how to leverage who they are for the team and company's best benefit!

Communicating Across the Generations:

When communicating with Baby Boomers...

Body language is important.

Be open and direct, but avoid controlling language.

Answer questions thoroughly and expect to be pushed for details.

Present options to demonstrate flexible thinking.

When communicating with Generation X...
Use email as a primary communication tool.
Talk in short sound bites to keep their attention.
Ask for as well as give regular feedback.
Keep them in the loop.
Use an informal communication style.

When communicating with Generation Y...
Challenge them at every opportunity.
Don't talk down to them.
Communicate using technology (e-mail, texting).
Ask for as well as give feedback.
Create a fun learning environment.

Encourage risk taking.
