Veterans Memorial

Letter from the General Manager

Franklin County Veterans Memorial is rolling into summer!  We have had an exciting second quarter.  We laughed with Kevin Hart and Martin Lawrence; and danced with Hall of Fame, Kids Artistic Revue and Star Systems. We were also very pleased to host the "Joining Forces" initiative with the First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden.  More than 2,500 children of veterans and active duty personnel came out to do the "Elmo Slide".

We have started the first phase of the rebranding effort for Franklin County Veterans Memorial.  More than 200 surveys were sent to clients and potential clients to gain feedback about our venue.  We are very excited to hear what the community and industry leaders would like to see from us in the future.  We are expecting to have results in the near future and start planning for what will be an exciting future for Franklin County Veterans Memorial.

We have a pretty busy summer ahead of us.  Red, White and Boom is just around the corner and if you have not heard...Chris Tucker is coming June 24, Daniel Tosh will be here on Sunday, July 31 for two shows and we are proud to host Hillsong United (http://hillsongunited.com) in August.  Follow us on Twitter and "like" us on Facebook to keep up to date with all the new things happening at Franklin County Veterans Memorial.

Celebrating New and Returning Clients

We would like to welcome some new summer clients to our roster.  On June 24, Bay Area Production is bringing Chris Tucker to our stage, Columbus Music Co-op will be hosting a concert in our Wayne Brehm Room this summer, Premier Productions is bringing Hillsong United to our stage, and the University of Phoenix will be holding their commencement in our auditorium this summer.

As we celebrate the arrival of these new clients, we would like to take a moment to thank four special clients who have been with us for 50 or more years!  We appreciate your loyalty and hope to continue working with you for the next 50.

Saying Thank You and Goodbye

After 36 years of service, Larry Cook will retire on July 1, 2011.  It is with great appreciation that we say goodbye.

Larry began his career at Veterans Memorial as a janitor and was promoted to the role of Housekeeping Superintendant being responsible for the utility staff scheduling and work load.

Larry has been an integral part of our team for so many years and through his leadership and commitment, he has made innumerable contributions to our organization.

It will be a bitter sweet moment for the Vets team when we say farewell to Larry.  Please join us in congratulating Larry on his retirement and wish him the best.

In Response to the Spring 2011 Newsletter
I remember when Veterans Memorial was relatively "new", being born in 1946.  I remember going there to the auditorium for something as a child and being overwhelmed by all those steps out front!  I remember going to the Kenley Players musicals in the summer during high school - oh so magical & wonderful.  Then I graduated from Upper Arlington High School in the auditorium... I even remember where I sat!

After graduating from OSU, I spent 17 years in Upstate New York, but returned in 1986.  In 1989 I attended the Balanced Life Expo at Veterans Memorial - the name was changed to Universal Light Expo soon after.  It was truly a turning point in my life!   I have attended and helped in putting on that show at Veterans Memorial every year since - for 23 years!

Other events bring me down to Vets often.  I love the building and the community this great edifice supports. Many cudos to those who keep Veterans Memorial open and affordable for community activities!

Many Thanks, Nancy Deckard
