| Letter from the General Manager | |
Franklin County Veterans Memorial is excited about 2011! We have been extremely busy the last three months with the annual Columbus Bride Show, AAA Great Vacations Expo, North Coast Golf Show, and the 23rd Annual Arnold Bodybuilding Championships.
In January our Board of Trustees voted to go through a rebranding effort for our facility. This will allow Franklin County Veterans Memorial to reposition ourselves within the community. As we embark on this effort, we will be reaching out to several of you in central Ohio with focus groups, telephone interviews and surveys to get your feedback about what FCVM means to the community and what your vision is for the future of the facility. Look for more on that in the coming months.
We have a very busy spring ahead of us with graduations: Columbus Public Schools, Southwestern City Schools, Franklin University, Columbus State Community College, OSU College of Nursing, Kaplan College and Fortis College. We look forward to hosting the commencements for each of these schools as they will send more than 2,000 new graduates into the central Ohio workforce.
We look forward to hosting some of our returning favorites like The Columbus Pet Expo, the International Gem & Jewelry Show and The Columbus Toy Show. We have several concerts and comedy shows coming aboard including Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Watch for more information about these upcoming events.

A Fight to Remember
Closed Circuit Fights at Vets
|
In the 70's, Veterans Memorial was the place to go in Columbus to watch headliner fights on closed circuit. Veterans Memorial would play host to sold out crowds of mostly men ramped up for the fight. Long-time Vets staff members still remember the swarm of crowds drinking beer and cheering for the fights. After paying ten dollars for an admission ticket - which wasn't cheap for the time - the crowd enjoyed drinking alcohol and munching until the concessions sold out. To date, the fights have been the only shows that depleted the alcohol stock.
These fights were not available to watch in every home. In order to view the fight, a special receiver was needed to view on closed circuit. Closed circuit television was how all the big fights were viewed if you weren't lucky enough to have ring side seats. Unlike broadcast television, closed circuit was not openly transmitted, thus the name. It was only transmitted to a specific place on a limited amount of monitors. Before the fight, a receiver would be shipped to Vets allowing the fight to be viewed. The receiver was not always reliable and at times only the audio could be heard. According to staff members, this did not affect the crowd. As long as they could hear the fight, they were happy.
One of the most recognizable fights viewed on the Vets screen was on March 24, 1975. This fight was broadcast in the auditorium and it shocked and inspired viewers across the country. Muhammad Ali vs. Chuck Wepner was not expected to be anything out of the ordinary, but the legend of this fight remains. Wepner lasted 15 rounds with Ali before being knocked out and losing to Ali. Wepner was able to knock Ali down once during this fight. This fight has become legend because a young Sylvester Stallone was inspired to create the character of Rocky Balboa after watching the determined Wepner in the ring.

Best View in Columbus!
Book your Spring/Summer Event at Vets
|
Most people who have visited Franklin County Veterans Memorial have only seen a fraction of the space we have available. One of the best kept secrets in Columbus for holding social gatherings is our Memorial Room. This room accommodates 100 people for a banquet and has beautiful marble walls accented by a romantic high ceiling. However, the truly breathtaking part of this room is the view. This room opens up to a patio which seats an additional 300 people. The Memorial Room and the Patio overlook the Scioto River and give guests a perfect view of the downtown skyline. We invite you to call (614) 221-4341 to schedule a tour of this room. |
